The 2008 Elections and The Peace Movement

15-02-2008 06:39

In America even if the Democrats win, the progressive peace movement needs to continue to “bear witness” to the crimes that our government, the CIA, and the Pentagonians are committing in foreign lands against people that have never harmed or attacked America.

Appearing before a packed auditorium at the University of Wisconsin Tuesday on the night of his victories in the “Potomac primaries,” held in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama delivered a speech that was notable for its populist demagogy, not only on the war in Iraq but also social conditions in America.

Philippines: Greed, Corruption and Illegitimate Debt

12-02-2008 14:51

Greed is defined as an excessive or uncontrolled desire for or pursuit of money, wealth, food, or other possessions especially when this denies the same goods to others. It is reprehensible acquisitiveness, an insatiable longing for power, and supremacy in order to advance individual interests at the cost of other's well being.

An excerpt from: 'AntiSemitism and other forms of racism'

12-02-2008 13:28

The main aim of this paper is to compare and contrast antiSemitism in Britain – particularly contemporary Britain – with other forms of racism. Most discussions of antiSemitism in Britain, and of the ‘Anglo’-Jewish community more generally, have taken place apart from mainstream writing on ‘race’ and ethnicity – that is, either within ‘Jewish studies’ fora and/or Jewish-oriented media. (However, see e.g. Cohen, P. 1988; Miles, 1993). That is, this topic has been somewhat ghettoised and therefore takes on the character of an internal debate (i.e. among Jews, or affiliated Jews).

Growing Insecurity in Timor Leste

12-02-2008 12:10

Timor-Leste’s President Jose Ramos-Horta was shot on 11 February by rebel soldiers in his house, a few miles outside the capital Dili. He is in a “critical but stable” condition, and he has been airlifted to Australia for further treatment. The failed coup was apparently led by Alfredo Reinado, a rebel soldier ho was himself killed in the attack. This incident is shocking, but shows how unstable the situation in Timor Leste still is. The “crisis” that started in 2006 is far from over, and Timor Leste’s security forces are unable to provide security. Not even for the acting President himself.

US to hold 9/11 show trial at Guantánamo

12-02-2008 09:24

The US military on Monday announced charges against six individuals it alleges helped plan the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The six prisoners—all of whom have been held incommunicado for more than six years, deprived of any legal rights or representation, and subjected to illegal and abusive interrogation methods—are to be tried in a single trial before a military commission at the Guantánamo Bay prison camp. The prosecution is seeking the death penalty for alleged war crimes.

Leeds has enjoyed major economic success in recent years, becoming the fastest growing city in England and number one financial centre after London. Its universities attract thousands of students and retail is booming. All this is reflected in the changing face of the city centre. But is the price of success now too high? The well loved Corn Exchange shops are all but gone; Kirkgate Market traders await an uncertain fate; skyscrapers and over-priced flats are set to dominate the skyline with little consultation while affordable council housing is demolished;

So we ask: Is Leeds going in the right direction? What does the general public think? Are there any alternatives?

This event will discuss the positive and negative things that are happening to Leeds as well as proposals for change. Leeds City Council has a major role to play but it is not alone – the public must have a big say in the future of the city.

Come to this Public Event where your views will be heard, debated and recorded in a public report.

Organised by academics at the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University
Chaired by Andrew Edwards from BBC Radio Leeds ‘Andrew and Georgey’s Breakfast Show’

The Mediterranean Union: Dividing the Middle East and North Africa

10-02-2008 15:07

Expansion and the Mediterranean Union
The Middle East and North Africa are in the process of being divided into spheres of influence between the European Union and the United States. Unknown to the global public, several milestone decisions have been made to end Franco-German and Anglo-American squabbling that will ultimately call for joint management of the spoils of war. Franco-German and Anglo-American interests are converging into one. The reality of the situation is that the area ranging from Mauritania to the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan will be shared by America, Britain, France, Germany, and their allies.

Congressional Black Caucus Grades Plummet on War, "Terror" and Trade Bills

07-02-2008 21:00

The "tripwire" bills showed great fissures in the Black Caucus on so-called Free Trade, willingness to cave to the Bush administration and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on funding the Iraq war, and on a bill that threatens a witch hunt in search of the sources of domestic "extremist belief systems" and violence-inciting "propaganda" on the Internet.

"Independent Kosovo", a Territory under US-NATO Military Rule

05-02-2008 16:33

Camp Bondsteel

While the European Union and the US, have acknowledged that they would be "opposed" to a " unilateral" declaration of independence of Kosovo, the secession of Kosovo from Serbia is already de facto. It is part of a US-NATO military agenda. It is the culmination of the 1999 NATO led invasion. It responds to US-NATO strategic objectives.
