France: The workers must take the struggle into their own hands!

20-11-2007 18:08

Seldom has trade-union unity been so great in the country: almost all the trade unions, including the most collaborationist, call for an indefinite strike at the SNCF, because of the determination and combativeness of the workers!
But what objective does this united leadership set for the struggle to come? In 1995 the objective was clear: total withdrawal of the Prime Minister Juppé plan against the pensions. Today what is the objective of this trade-union unity?
Total withdrawal of the new attack against the pensions?

Thoughts on evolving strategy

17-11-2007 13:47

While battles are fought against the police, protests raged against politicians and corporations, I want to raise the more thorny issue of what do we, as activists, do about the "common people", the general mass of "ordinary" people who make up the bulk of consumers (and producers)?
In this short piece I argue that it is necessary to obtain support from people in the street for a number of reasons: first, because of the groundswell support that this group could lend to the cause(s) and second, because it then becomes that much more tenuous for the authorities to dismiss the cause(s) we fight for as radical, or reflecting fringe interests.

The IAEA’s latest report on the Iranian civilian nuclear programme will take the wind out of the sails of the war party in Washington. It suggests Tehran might be telling the truth about not having worked as extensively on its centrifuge designs as the Anglo-American bloc alleges it has.

Edinburgh: Contempt of Court charges against lefty lawyer in Terrorism case

08-11-2007 14:11

As informed by grassroot group Scotland Against Criminalising Communities, our lefty lawyer Aamer Anwar is likely to face contempt of court charges for disagreeing with the judge in the Siddique "terrorism" case.

At Edinburgh High Court - 23rd of October, Lord Carloway sentenced Mohammed Atif Siddique - convicted last month of "terrorism" offences - to a total of 8 years in jail.

The main point of controversy seem to be the different opinions in if the defendant actually did anything illegal.

Why did Crossrail hole plot-backer Tory Theresa May stay silent on C4 News?

08-11-2007 13:14

Berkshire Tory MP [and David Cameron’s sparkly-shoed ‘shadow; to Harriet Harman’ in the UK House of Commons] Theresa May appeared on C4 news to 'review' the then just delivered 'queen's speech' earlier this week. She did not even mention Crossrail as far as could be observed. Yet she has been making a lot of 'local noise' in and around Maidenhead, within hearing distance of voters, that she believes the area will be left to rot in economic wasteland unless the Crossrail line is extended to cover the rest of the country to the west of Paddington!

So why Theresa’s silence on Crossrail when appearing on Channel 4 news within hours of the formal ‘inclusion’ in the 'Queen’s Speech’ of the Crossrail Bill?

Was it to do with Channel 4 News’s belated recognition, recorded in October 2007, that Crossrail was indeed CRASS? That Gordon Brown had given the so-called go-head AGAINST the advice of Brown’s own ‘expert’ on UK transport economics, Rod Eddington?

As if that were not enough, there is now confession by ‘Dr B Ching’ in ‘Private Eye’ [dated 9 November 2007] itself, that Gordon Brown has not given any spontaneous go-ahead to Crossrail on any merit whatever but that it is a package that has been secured via the influence linked with Douglas Alexander and the employment of his former parliamentary secretary by the USA conglomerate Bechtel……..
