Audio reports and background from the 4th KnowledgeLab

19-02-2007 12:00

Audio The 4th Knowledge was held at Nottingham University
Over 50 people came together over the weekend at Nottingham University for an event called 'the Knowledge Lab'. The event is aimed at bridging the gap between activism and academia to reflect in a more indepth way on various issues, this time based around 'Knowledge'.

Workshops were based around questions such as 'how do we know'? what is knowledge'? 'where do we gain our knowledge from'? 'does someone hold control over our knowledge'? 'how does gender affect knowledge'? 'how does education effect knowledge'? 'how are our senses affected by advertising and the media'? 'how can suppressed knowledge be released into the mainstream'? Other sessions included a presentation on alternative education projects, an Indymedia session showing people how to use the website and publish news, and an experiment in anarchism called SOMA - Consensus decision making without the mind/body split.

We recorded an interview with one of the organisers of the event and a chat with a 'knowledgelab-regular' about the history and aims of the knowledgelabs. The last recording is part of a session called Open Spaces for Dialogue and Enquiry (OSDE) which looked at knowledge, what it is and how our knowledge is affected.

The US Propaganda Campaign Against Iran

19-02-2007 11:05

The US government has stepped up its rhetoric against Iran this week with a presentation held in Baghdad designed to support the claim that, as worded by President Bush last month, "Iran is providing material support for attacks on American troops." [1] US officials said that weapons were being smuggled into Iraq by an elite unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard known as the Quds Force on orders "coming from the highest levels of the Iranian government." [2] But, as the Washington Post observed, "The officials offered no evidence to substantiate allegations that the 'highest levels' of the Iranian government had sanctioned support for attacks against U.S. troops." [3] That conclusion was admittedly an "inference", and the defense analyst present acknowledged the inconclusiveness of the evidence, saying, "The smoking gun of an Iranian standing over an American with a gun, it's never going to happen." Conservative Lunacy and Public Paralysis

18-02-2007 11:19

The Australian Federal Treasurer, Peter (supercilious prick) Costello today impetuously let one cat out of the (tactics) bag! Responding to a question relating to the economy, Costello took the opportunity to state that “the people wouldn’t trust their mortgages to the opposition party or to the leader of the opposition”. Tired fear tactics aside, Costello’s statement relates directly to the crippling debt the Australian public has been experiencing since the conservatives took office (hint!) The conservatives are the problem not the solution.

US-North Korean nuclear agreement: clearing the decks for Iran

17-02-2007 23:58

Far from marking a fundamental change in the militarist course of the Bush administration, the deal reached between the US and North Korea represents a temporary and tactical shift that conveniently sidelines a potentially explosive issue as the US prepares for war against Iran.

17-02-2007 19:06

Two bombings this week in Zahedan in southeastern Iran are the latest in a series of incidents involving armed opposition groups based among the country’s ethnic minorities. Anticapitalist video: Memory, Dignity And Struggle

17-02-2007 15:25

The Spanish “Transition to democracy” was simply a way to fortify the capitalist economic model. With such Transition, the Spanish dominant class eliminated all sort of social resistance and opened the way for business; they made a Francoism without Franco and presented the Transition as a triumph of the people. It was a history written by the owners of money and their fascist sentries.
But Memory, Dignity and Struggle continue

Bush Administration's smoking gun on Iran Misfires

17-02-2007 11:03

Taking into account the false notes struck by the anonymous officials, the damaging admissions they made and the absence of information they needed to make a case, the briefing appears to have been a serious setback to the administration's propaganda campaign. It will certainly haunt administration officials trying to convince Congress to support its increased aggressiveness toward Iran.

Ulster on the Euphrates: The Anglo-American Dirty War in Iraq

16-02-2007 23:53

Bush's formal greenlighting of the death-squad option built upon an already securely-established base, part of a larger effort to turn the world into a "global free-fire zone" for covert operatives, as one top Pentagon official told Hersh. For example, in November 2002 a Pentagon plan to infiltrate terrorist groups and "stimulate" them into action was uncovered by William Arkin, then writing for the Los Angeles Times. The new unit, the "Proactive, Pre-emptive Operations Group," was described in the Pentagon documents as "a super-Intelligence Support Activity" that brings "together CIA and military covert action, information warfare, intelligence and cover and deception."

Obama Embraces Israel “Security” Mythology

16-02-2007 22:02

In order to be selected to run as president here in the United States, the field of “hopefuls” must pay homage to Israel, AIPAC, and the “New York money men,” as Wesley Clark has noted. Thus senator Barack Obama recently delivered a speech designed “to remove any doubts that the Democratic Party’s donors and constituents, many of whom are Jewish, may have about his support for Israel,” according to Haaretz.
