The Natalie Bracht story, the plot thickens
01-07-2008 12:19
This story has been running in the mainstream media, both local and national press, since mother of five Natalie Bracht, left her home in Sunderland on 17th May this year and went on the run. With joint British and German nationality, Natalie settled in Sunderland with her five daughters in 2006. She told local papers and social services that she had fled her home city of Dusseldorf to escape a dangerous husband involved in a religious cult. She was provided with housing and benefits etc but whether the authorities believed this story or not is unclear. What we do know is that Childrens Services were involved in the case from the beginning.Letter to the Times: Merchants of War

In January of 2002, the Washington Post ran a story detailing a CIA plan put forward to President Bush shortly after 9/11 by CIA Director George Tenet titled, "Worldwide Attack Matrix," which was "outlining a clandestine anti-terror campaign in 80 countries around the world. What he was ready to propose represented a striking and risky departure for U.S. policy and would give the CIA the broadest and most lethal authority in its history." The plan entailed CIA and Special Forces "covert operations across the globe," and at "the heart of the proposal was a recommendation that the president give the CIA what Tenet labeled "exceptional authorities" to attack and destroy al Qaeda in Afghanistan and the rest of the world." Tenet cited the need for such authority "to allow the agency to operate without restraint -- and he wanted encouragement from the president to take risks." Among the many authorities recommended was the use of "deadly force."
Radio Ecoshock on James Hansen on Climate Criminals
29-06-2008 22:37
NASA scientist James Hansen shakes up Capitol Hill (and the media) with explosive testimony to the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Climate Change. For one thing, he thinks oil industry executives who purposely (and secretly) fund groups to confuse the public about climate science – should be charged with crimes against humanity.

The MOD has more than enough money to provide military equipment to our armed forces. There needs to be a system for impartial criminal investigation and prosecution of fraud and corruption on military equipment contracts.Simian Reason & Great Apes
27-06-2008 20:23
This week the Catalan eco-socialist deputy to the Spanish parliament, Joan Herrera saw his bill to commit the Spanish state to the "Declaration on Great Apes" become law. The greater simians comprising chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans are now to enjoy 3 rights - that of life, Protection of individual liberty & Prohibition of torture.I argue that this long campaigned for victory belongs not only to animal rights campaigners but to all those who are committed to secular and humanist society.

Climate Change: The lost generation, and possibly much more
27-06-2008 10:05
Read the article Rising seas threaten west Antarctic, and it’s all but impossible to think, yet again, of all the chances to take serious, desperately needed action on CO2 emissions that we’ve thrown away over the last twenty years. What could trigger such a bout of depressing navel staring?

including a history of ZimbabweZanu PF's hold on power, necessarily steadfast because of their foremost role in the independence struggle, subsequently led to their own concentration of political power. The brutal represssion of the MDC opposition over the last couple of months has led to near universal condemnation. The western media has neglected to mention that there has also been violence from the MDC (under extreme provocation - this is after all a class war between Zanu PF's black bourgeois, their tribal support base and the military versus the trade union working class/impoverished middle class and rural poor of the MDC). Meanwhile doubts continue to surface as to the MDC's privatisation agenda.
Media Lens Alert: Selling the Fireball - George Bush and Iran
25-06-2008 10:07
When George Bush arrived in Britain last week as part of his "farewell tour", the real reasons for the visit were buried well out of sight. The tour was not, as the Guardian suggested, a mere "continental au revoir". The purpose was to coerce Gordon Brown into raising troop levels in Afghanistan and to support toughened sanctions on Iran. Bush said pressure on Iran was necessary to "solve this problem diplomatically", but warned: "Iranians must understand, however, that all options are on the table."
