Decision Day for Minorca Opencast Mine Application

Leicestershire County Council has announced that a decision on whether UK Coal's application for an opencast mine on the Minorca site can go ahead will be made on Thursday 23rd June. The Minorca Opencast Protest Group in, PR 104, gives more information on this and what MOPG is planning to do to prevent this application from succeeding.

GM Potato Decontamination in Belgium

On Sunday 30th May, 2011 over 250 people gathered and successfully decontaminated a GM potato field in Wetteren, Belgium. Despite heavy-handed policing, demonstrators from all over Europe joined with locals and representatives of the farming community. As well as decontaminating the GM tatties, there was even a debating area and fresh veg stalls!

Would any sane person think dumpster diving would have stopped Hitler, or that composting would have ended slavery or brought about the eight-hour workday, or that chopping wood and carrying water would have gotten people out of Tsarist prisons, or that dancing naked around a fire would have helped put in place the Voting Rights Act of 1957 or the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Then why now, with all the world at stake, do so many people retreat into these entirely personal “solutions”?

The "battle of the potato" field in Wetterem, near Ghent, Belgium, was a resounding victory for anti-GM activists on Sunday (29 May) as members of a crowd of around 400 people broke through police lines and barbed wire fences to destroy an experimental Genetically Modified potato crop.

Shell Belmullet office shut down again -join the continuous protests!

Shell's Belmullet office was once again shut down by protesters to highlight the ongoing concerns by local residents and supporters about Shell's proposed Corrib gas project. This morning (wed 25th may) the blockade began at 7.30am and for 2 1/2 hours protesters were able to stop Shell workers entering the building. IRMS arrived around10am to end the blockade.
