Email alert: Stop more deforestation biofuels and peat burning as 'green energy'

On 10th January, the European Commission is expected to make a final decision on the European Biomass Plan. There are serious concerns that they will promote ever more biofuels from palm oil, soya and sugar cane linked to rainforest destruction, peat drainage, biodiversity losses and, in some cases, human rights abuses. There is even pressure on them to class and supoort peat as a source of 'renewable biomass'. Please write to the European Commission today to express concerns.

Encourage Green Groups to Promote Plant Based Diets

Despite the increasingly overwhelming evidence of the impact that meat & dairy farming has on the planet, none of the national environmental campaigning organisations currently promote plant based diets. Wouldn`t it be great if we could influence groups like Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace to encourage their supporters and the general public to adopt a veggie/vegan diet for the benefit of the planet?!! Well, now we have an opportunity to do just that.

“Gorleben suitable, but seeking other sites”

The German environment minister says the salt deposit in Gorleben is geologically suitable for a final nuclear waste depository but other locations will be considered.
“The findings so far about a dense rock cover and hence the barrier function of the salt were positively confirmed,” wrote the minister, Sigmar Gabriel, in response to an open letter from opponents of nuclear installations in the north German village.

Bears That Have Stopped Hibernating: More GW Consequences

Extreme Autumn Temperatures Cause Unseasonable Flowering In The Netherlands

Observers in the Netherlands reported that more than 240 wild plant species were flowering in December, along with more than 200 cultivated species. According to biologist Arnold van Vliet of Wageningen University, this unseasonable flowering is being caused by extremely high autumn temperatures.

New police clampdown - on Halloween masks

A couple of months back, some people protesting against landfill at Hafod Quarry in North Wales wore Halloween masks and blockaded the gates. One of the protesters has now been issued with a fixed penalty notice under Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986.

Aberdeen Campaign against Climate Change demonstrate against airport expansion

Demonstrators outside Aberdeen Town House
On December 13th 2006 Aberdeen Campaign Against Climate Change held a demonstration outside the Town House in Aberdeen where councillors were considering the planning application for an extension to the runway of Aberdeen Airport. Twenty people took part in the protest. Disappointingly, the application was approved by a large majority.
