The recent proclamation of an “ethanol alliance” between US President George W. Bush and Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva has been hailed by apologists for both governments as an advance in the development of alternative sources of energy and a gain for both countries’ economies. In Brazil, this sector is expected to record export earnings of $7 billion this year, and both countries are mounting a drive to increase the production of Brazilian sugarcane.

For more than a century what will be the Olympic Park was home to some of the nation’s dirtiest industries. Within, and surrounding, what will be the Olympic Park some 7,500 people were employed in the chemicals industry. A new document reveals a second case of radioactive waste dumped in 1953 in a former landfill site within the Park. An Environment Agency analysis shows higher than normal levels of radioactive material in the River Lee.

Worker's Memorial Day
Last Friday between 30-40 cyclists turned up to Critical Mass in Birmingham's city centre. We didn't encounter any driver aggression during our ride but the weather was a little overcast. We also came across a memorial to workers in Pigeon Park to remember those killed at work.

Arctic Ice Melting 3x Faster Than Predictions

A study published in the current issue of
Geophysical Research Letters reveals that
"the actual rate at which summer sea ice
had shrunk per decade during the past 50
years was more than three times faster than
an average of 18 of the most highly regarded
climate simulations."(1)

This is another in a growing number of reports
that are showing that the globe is warming
at an accelerated pace, not in the gradual
steady incline that was expected by the
scientists.
