Letter to the United Nations Exclude Bayer from Global Compact

The Coalition against Bayer Dangers, an international network based in Germany, today urged the United Nations to exclude the chemical and pharmaceutical corporation Bayer from the UN Global Compact. In a complaint to the Compact´s Executive Director, Georg Kell, the group points to Bayer´s recent serious violations of the Global Compact´s principles and integrity measures.

Dutch animal liberationists imprisoned, new address

In April ELP reported the jailing of a Dutch animal rights activist, Peter Janssen, who has been accused of involvement in a raid on a mink farm. A second person who was arrested at the same time as Peter was later released without charge. However since then ELP has learnt of a third arrest. The third person is Naomi van der Pol and she has been remanded into custody. Naomi has been in prison for a month and a half now without any support, so it is vital we send her lots of messages of support from all around the world.

Paul Watson announces aggressive campaign to clear Mediterranean of illegal fisheries

Captain Paul Watson, founder and leader of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has announced he will launch an aggressive campaign to clear the Mediterranean Sea of illegal fishing operations. Speaking at an event to mark World Ocean Day, at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Paul made his intentions clear. "There are more than 600 illegal fishing vessels in the Mediterranean Sea. If need be, we'll sink them all."

London Eco-village occupation

Around 70 protesters occupied an empty plot of land next to Kew Bridge in Brentford, London (NR TW8 0EW). They plan to setup an eco-village. This will showcase community based sustainable methods of living such as vegetable growing, compost toilets. They in the process of setting up tents and are cleaning the site of rubbish.

Shell causeway 'washed away' by Shell to Sea action

Reclaim the beach!
Part of the Shell causeway extending into the sea at Glengad was removed by Shell to Sea protesters on monday evening. This was in protest at the illegal blocking of access to the public beach and to oppose the forcing of this unsafe project on the local community and the giveaway of Ireland's natural resources.

Confrontation ensues as Shell vessels arrive at Rossport

Monday the 1st of June saw the arrival of a multitude of assorted vessels to Broadhaven bay. The boats, which are subcontracted by The Royal Dutch Shell company, are attempting to prepare for works on the controversial Corrib gas project. Today however, their progress has been significantly impaired by resident Shell to Sea activists that had already gathered a small, albeit formidable, fleet of kayaks, ready to deploy within short notice.
