Ancient woodland threatened by oil drilling help us try and save it!

09-04-2009 12:35

Ancient Bury Hill Wood
Europa Oil and Gas has applied to drill for oil at Bury Hill Wood which is part of the Abinger Forest, Surrey. The hydrocarbon exploration site (or oil well as most people know it!) will result in the loss of 0.74 hectares (1.8 acres) of precious ancient woodland.

The testing phase of the application will last a minimum of five weeks, however depending on what is found the works could last significantly longer.

Circus and Zoo animals could make a comback to the UK sign the ePetition to stop

08-04-2009 16:05

From the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, in Kenya:
 http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/updates/updates.asp?Rhino=&ID=195

On Friday 27 February, the Great British Circus began its 2009 season in Nottingham, England, and this year has seen them include three elephants in their act.

It has been 10 years since an elephant performed in a circus in Britain; then it was Anne, an Asian elephant, who was put through a routine of tricks at the Bobby Roberts Super Circus.

... and...

It is failures and weakness on the part of DEFRA that has allowed this use of animals in circuses to continue. With Defra's report 'Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses' concluding that there is no scientific evidence to demonstrate that travelling circuses are not able to meet the welfare needs of any type of non-domestic animals presently being used in the United Kingdom. It is worth knowing that in reaching this conclusion Defra chose to ignore evidence relating to either animal performance or training!

The real cost of salmon

05-04-2009 12:10

The salmon sold in every supermarket in the UK has a terrible hidden cost; thousands of seals are shot every year by the fish farmers. While puffins starve the fish their young could eat are fed to sick salmon brought up in cramped conditions more akin to a battery cage than the open ocean.
