Last night the council met to consider Tesco's planning application for their proposed Mill Road store. The meeting was packed, and while most councillors abstained, none voted for it, leaving the votes of the new Green councillor and one Lib Dem to reject the proposal on grounds including noise and traffic. Tesco proceeded to evict the Mill Road Social Centre who had squatted the site, despite saying they could stay until work could begin.Full article | 1 addition | 2 comments

Since 7.50 am this morning, 20 participants in this year's Camp for Climate Action and members of Action Against Agrofuels have been blockading the only access gate to Cargill's European regional head office in Cobham, Surrey. 8 activists have locked on to the gates closing the site down completely. Deeply undermining a previously good working relationship between police and protesters, yesterday evening over 100 police officers ransacked the Camp for Climate Action site. Items essential to the health and safety of the camp were removed, including pipes for the delivery of fresh water.

At first glance it looked like a trendy new device for holding a spare lipstick. On closer inspection a wire was spotted coming from the back of it. The copper in question was friendly enough and explained that the device had completed its trials and would be rolled out for general use within a couple of months. As well as the head cam there was a second one on his chest in case anyone tried to grab the more obvious one. It was activated by a switch and also stored the 30 seconds of footage prior to its activation.
If all the Police are due to be trained and issued with this gear, does that mean that a certain unit (known for their blue shouldered jackets) will soon be surplus to requirements? Well, if in a couple of months time you spot some familiar faces working as security guards in your local Tescos, you now know why…..

Activists beaten by locals on the first night of the Camp for Climate Action

Peace broke out on the Hoo Peninsula yesterday evening, as a local youth football team met the Camp for Climate Action under the no-mans land of Kingsnorth Power Station. When the opponents of local football team Deansgate Ridge failed to turn up, people from the climate camp hastily assembled a makeshift team so that the match could go ahead, but were soundly thrashed 7-1 by the fancy footwork of the Hoo Peninsula’s finest.29.07.08 Climate camp caravan - film stop.

The caravan stopped at the Synergy Centre, near Oval in London. Around 30-50 people watched a film about sustainability in Cuba, on a cycle-powered cinema. Afterwards there was a Q+A session with climate camp staff, London councillors and other green - thinkers.

HELLISHEIDI (ICELAND) – This morning the direct action campaign Saving Iceland has occupied one of the main geothermal drill sites in Hengill where the Hellisheidi power plant is being expanded by Reykjavik Energy. 20 activists have chained themselves to machinery and have climbed the drill to hang up a banner saying “Reykjavik Energy out of Hellisheidi and Yemen”. I've just read on wikinews how the US Federal minimum wage was increased last week from $5.85 to $6.55 an hour. If by chance you are one of those who haven't enjoyed a weakening dollar to spend your salary on fun weekend shopping sprees in New York City and thus learnt elementary currency trading, we're talking about an increase from £2.94 an hour to every 60 minutes.This of course raises many questions. Not least of which might be : how much can you buy for $6.55 or £3.14 or would it be worth you spending a Sunday afternoon comparing wage levels between your locality and some other state in Europe?

The climate camp will move this weekend from its location at Heathrow Airport to a new location - Kingsnorth power station in Medway, Kent. This conference aimed to examine the ongoing situation at Heathrow and bring different groups such as Camp for Climate Action, local campaign groups HACAN and NoTRAG), and Greenpeace to discuss a broad strategy against expansion.

Due to cleaning and repair work the containment system for a uranium solution holding tank was not functional when the tank filled. The inflow exceeded the tank's capacity and 30 cubic meters of Uranium solution leaked with 18 cubic meters spilled to the ground. Testing found elevated uranium levels in the nearby Gaffière and Lauzon rivers. The liquid that escaped to the ground contained about 75kg of unenriched uranium which is toxic as a heavy metal while possessing only slight radioactivity. Estimates for the releases were initially higher, up to 360kg of natural uranium, but revised downward later. [3]
French authorities have banned the use of water from the Gaffière and Lauzon for drinking and watering of crops. Swimming, water sports and fishing were also banned.
This incident has been classified as Level 1 on the International Nuclear Event Scale.
