Silvio and Angie
US Knew Tunisian Gov. Rotten Corrupt

17-01-2011 22:58

Bin Alis demolition ?
New Wikileaks: US Knew Tunisian Gov. Rotten Corrupt, Supported Ben Ali Anyway ... The Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten released a series of US diplomatic cables from 2006 on massive and pervasive corruption and nepotism in Tunisia and its effect on economic development and social problems. The cables show that the United States government was fully aware of the dangerous and debilitating level of corruption in Tunisia, and its anti-democratic implications. But they raise the question of whether Washington was wise to make Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, despite his clear foibles, the pillar of its North Africa policy because of his role, as a secular strongman, in repressing Muslim movements (as William MacLean of Reuters argues).

Chinese Go Shopping!

"As China Goes, So Goes the World. How Chinese Consumers Are Transforming Everything." That's the title from a new book by Karl Gerth. He's a fellow at Merton College, teaching modern Chinese history at Oxford University, in Britain. We talk how big name brands and their knock-offs, plus cars as status symbols, invaded China. Why didn't they take the green energy route? Did the Chinese government know Western consumer culture was failing, unsustainable, and damaging the world?

"Indignez-vous!" 600,000 sold, shaking France &world (Translation here) Hessel

15-01-2011 05:48

Coming to US, should be $4 or $5.
Perhaps the timing of the book, released during troubled times of economic crisis and inequality has rung a bell for the people of France. Maybe it’s the fact that the author is a holocaust survivor almost a century old -- former spy, escapee from a concentration camp, then Resistance fighter for the rest of WWII -- which lends credibility to his message. Maybe it's the poetic prose. Whatever the reason, Indignez Vous! by Stéphane Hessel is the #1 bestselling book on Amazon.fr, and has been for some time. The book has sold over 600,000 in just three months.

Are the food riots spreading across north africa being caused by commodity specu

10-01-2011 22:47

it’s not like it hasn’t happened before. financial speculators buy up food commodities, hoping prices will rise. if prices do rise, there is no incentive to sell. the longer demand is greater than supply, prices will rise. eventually, someone will sell, and prices will stabilize...

...if you weren’t paying attention in those days, there were food riots all over the world. the rioting sparked revolutions which topples at least three governments.

this was originally written this from an american perspective, but it’s clear that the peole who casually toss people’s lives away don’t just hate people in one country or another, they seem to hate human beings in general.

and this post didn’t even bring up the pointless wars, the resource extraction industries, trigger-happy cops and ideologies of hate…this world isn’t going to hell, it’s become hell.

WIKILEAKS: Israel has 100 bunkerbusters

03-01-2011 12:58

In the autumn of 2009, American and Israeli leaders agreed that they should keep secret the delivery of bombs that can destroy Iranian nuclear facilities. In November 2009, a high-level group of Americans and Israelis met in Tel Aviv. On the agenda was the political and military situation in the Middle East. Concern about Iran's nuclear program dominated both the American and Israeli delegation, according to a document that Aftenposten has accessed via Wikileaks. The document states that the Israeli government considers 2010 a critical year, provided that the Iranians continued to increase the defense of the nuclear facilities. -Both sides then discussed the upcoming delivery of GBU-28 "bunker-busters" to Israel. A point was made that deliveries should take place in secret so that allegations that the U.S. government was helping Israel to prepare for an attack on Iran, "could be avoided, according to the document.

This week we continue our series on the age of reunion. We start with Elisabet Sahtouris speaking on evolutionary leaps which spring from cooperation, the unification of formerly disparate organisms to create new life forms of massively greater complexity. Next Brian Willson recalls his unexpected empathic connection with a faceless victim of US napalm in Vietnam. In our second hour, we hear Jonathan Balcombe, author of Second Nature : The Inner Lives of Animals on the rich inner lives of animals, and why scientists are showing interest in them after ignoring them for so long. We conclude with a moving speech by Anita Burke on the role of forgiveness and love in changing corporate culture.
