Colombia: mass demonstration in Bogotá
Of Indymedia Colombia; translation: Kh. - 24.08.2003 11:32
Chronology of the 12th of august

There was a general strike on the 12th of august in Colombia, however this strike was only carried out in total in the petroleum industry, and there was also a mass demonstration of 100,000 persons in Bogotá, most of whom involved are employed in the agricultural sector.
Thereby acts of violence were committed by the police.
The protests are against the planned American free trade contract ALCA, that threatens the existence of the national economy.
Just in these days Bush's trade delegate Zoellick visted Bogotá in order to persuade the Colombian government to the conclusion of a bilateral trade contract.
Here is a chronological report of Indymedia Colombia about the events in Bogotá and different parts of the country.

Protests against Software Patents in Europe

26-08-2003 11:38

The Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure is organising a demonstration against software patents in Brussels tomorrow, and an online demo. If software patents become legal in the EU it risks large numbers of run-on-a-shoestring web sites such as Indymedia being required to pay fees to large companies. It would also have implications for wider campaigns on patenting.

Pipeline Politics

21-08-2003 12:57

US foreign policy is determined by access to and control of resources, mainly oil, but not exclusively so, and access to markets. Dependent as it is on Middle East oil, US has sought to diversify supply. The Caspian is of growing importance, but in the absence of a pipeline through Turkey, which may yet not be built, the US has to look to other areas of the world, in particular Latin America.

critical developments in Guatemala

21-08-2003 07:53

The dispute over whether General Efrain Ríos Montt can run for president has dramatically escalated. Today [July 24], in a coordinated campaign of violence, busloads of followers of Ríos Montt, including paramilitaries, entered the capital city and attacked groups of people, journalists, and critics of the general. They have threatened media offices and human rights organizations. Héctor Ramírez, a journalist, died of a heart attack while escaping from an aggressive mob, and other journalists narrowly escaped lynching. This very dangerous development may be the prelude to a coup.
