GEORGETOWN, Guyana — In a bid to make up millions of dollars in debt, the British company running Guyana's water utility said Tuesday it would begin cutting supplies to press thousands of customers to pay their bills.

Less than half of Guyana's 147,000 consumers are paying their bills regularly to Guyana Water Inc., said Derek Hodson of Birmingham-based Severn Trent. Outstanding customer bills total Guyanese $70 million (US$3.8 million).

The company will supply water for only 10 hours a day beginning Tuesday, or two hours less than previous, Hodson said. If customers do not pay their bills this week, they will have their supply cut off in September, he said.

Severn began a five-year contract to manage Guyana Water in January, inheriting about $97 million (US$5 million) in debt. In addition, the water company owes $100 million (US$500,000) in unpaid electricity bills.

"If we can't pay for the electricity account, the power company has already said they will start disconnecting power supplies to our water pumping stations," Hodson said.

Guyana is a former British colony of about 700,000 on the north coast of South America.

Severn Trent also has worked three years in neighboring Trinidad and Tobago.
