Waterford Crystal: ‘We’re occupying this plant to save our jobs’

Workers at the Waterford Crystal factory in Ireland have delivered a powerful example of how to take on the recession – they are occupying their plant to keep it open. The factory is owned by Waterford Wedgewood, which went into receivership on 5 January. The receiver suggested that the plant move to a three-day week. Workers were reluctant to go along with this and were suspicious of the motives behind it. Many believed that the factory would close as soon as they were out the door. It turned out the receiver had the same idea.

Recession combined with globalization and the weakening of Labour laws in Europe, is providing some employers with the incentive and the means to minimize their wage costs and weaken the bargaining power of organised workers. Recently this has taken the form of subcontracting out work to firms employing workers from abroad which is being opposed by industrial action under the slogan "British jobs for British workers".

Healthcare is a Right!

On a rainy November 13th evening in NYC a large group of people gathered in Times Square, and then marched to the headquarters of GHI, a non-profit health insurance company which faces privatization. The marchers were demonstrating in support of the passage of HR 676, a bill for national single-payer healthcare, and against the proposed privatization of GHI/HIP.

City council job cuts protest: Interview

On Tuesday, around 200 council workers protested outside the Council House in Nottingham's Market Square against job cuts proposed by the city council. These would see around 400 people laid off in order to save £2 million. To find out what motivated these protests and where the campaign is likely to develop I interviewed Unison activist Jean Thorpe. I started off by asking her exactly what she does in the union.

Not on the Plane! Soon to be on a train
Rashida Yasmeen and her four sons, Mahmood, Qadeer, Zaheer and Safeer were not put on their removal flight to Pakistan yesterday evening after their Scottish lawyer managed to successfully lodge and application for 'First Orders' in the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

Many thanks to everyone who faxed, phoned and emailed on their behalf.

We will see them back in Glasgow - were they belong - as soon as tomorrow!

Rashida's lawyer has just phoned to say that Rashida and her family are being released from detention tomorrow and will be coming back to Glasgow!

Ireland: Workers occupy Waterford crystal factory

Two hundred workers have occupied the historic Waterford Crystal plant and visitor centre at Kilbarry near Waterford, Ireland. The occupation was launched on Friday in response to the decision by the failed company's receiver to cease manufacturing production, lock out and sack some 480 workers. Local shops have supplied food and drinks.
