Documentary Filmmakers Detained In Oaxaca

3 December 2006 - two documentary filmmakers and a translator were detained, as they ate at a restaurant near their hotel in the Oaxaca City Center at approximately 2:15 PM local Mexican time. Initial reports indicated that Municipal Police detained the three U.S. citizens, who have been in Oaxaca following and documenting the situation for the last couple of weeks. They were held for roughly 4 hours and then released.

Tug Workers To Block The Docks?

The port of Liverpool could be shut down by a series of tug strikes, bringing back memories of the dockers’ dispute in the 1990s. Workers are angry that they are currently registered in the Channel Islands, and therefore lose their 12.5% National Insurance payments.

Manchester protest at JJB sacking

Last night a dozen or so supporters protested outside the JJB Sports shops on Market Street, Manchester during the evening rush. The response from the public was fantastic - the vast majority of customers turned away.

Shop management didn't seem too chuffed, the manager was buzzing between the shops watching in dismay. They took photos of the protesters (if you're reading this, can you send a copy so we can post it here?). Don't worry, you aren't going to need photos to remember what protests look like if the sacked union rep isn't reinstated quickly!

A large scale disturbance broke out at Harmondsworth after HM Inspector of Prisons (HMIP) published a report on Harmondsworth which it described as "Undoubtedly the poorest report" issued on any immigration removal centre to date.

Merseyside Fire Authority Stirs Up More Trouble

Following the partial defeat of their cuts agenda this summer, Merseyside Fire Authority is trying to get its own back, and weaken the morale of victorious firefighters. Three weeks ago, letters were served to fourteen emergency crew members, calling them to hearings over incidents during the walkout, including one for 'smiling aggressively'. Now a firefighter is in trouble for drinking a cup of tea!

Help stop biometric controls in workplace for migrant cleaners

ISS is the company that has been in the news this week for doing the nasty on the cleaners in the City of London. Now they are at it in the London Underground. Cleaners in the depots, where they clean the carriages, must now clock in and out using biometric machines that measure their unique fingers' proportions. All the cleaners are migrants, who will be the first target of biometric IDs and the like. They want to fight this but need help.

Cleaners occupy Goldman Sachs

Yesterday a small but determined group of low paid cleaners and their supporters occupied city firm Goldman Sachs. The demo was expected and all entrances had been closed except one. Police and extra security were evident. However the peaceful yet determined occupiers outnumbered the guards and soon the lobby was occupied by the demonstrators. Extra Police were brought in to control the gathering and escort them outside. Details were taken but there were no arrests.

Goldman Sachs Headquarters Occupied by Cleaners Union

Today at 12pm around 25 cleaners and supporters went into the lobby of Goldman Sachs Headquarters, despite attempts by security to kick them out. They were protesting at the treatment of cleaners by ISS, which is partially owned by Goldman Sachs, and demanded a deal with the TGWU.
