A Memory Abused: No Rest or Peace for Neda Agha-Soltan

13-12-2009 20:28

The ruthless exploitation of the death of Neda for political purposes is an egregious example of a propaganda war being waged by the enemies of Iran – everyone should be concerned, however, since the manipulation of the media and public opinion is a feature of domestic news coverage in the West as much as it is of reporting on a Middle Eastern state.

Normalising the Crime of the Century

10-12-2009 17:11

Iraq's current and planned potential ballistic missiles
The purpose of the Chilcot inquiry is to normalise an epic crime by providing enough of a theatre of guilt to satisfy the media so that the only issue that matters, that of prosecution, is never raised. When he appears in January, Blair will play this part to odious perfection, dutifully absorbing the hisses and boos. All “inquiries” into state crimes are neutered in this way.

Give Up Anti-Fascism: An Anarchist Response

07-12-2009 10:10

An article appeared in the August edition of Red Pepper magazine entitled ‘Anti-fascism Isn’t Working’. Written by a non-aligned anarchist it was originally called ‘Give Up Anti-fascism’ it is this version we shall be referring to here for the simple reason it’s both the author’s original edit and the one most read, by radicals at least.

Cop15: Notes from below

03-12-2009 12:49

This December (ten years since the alter-globalisation movements took to the streets of Seattle to oppose the world trade organization) activists from across the globe will be descending on Copenhagen to protest the COP15 round of discussion. Has the UK Direct Action movement changed in the interceding years between these cycles of struggle? And what lessons, if any, can it learn from its recent past?

We need a New Anticapitalist Party in Britain

02-12-2009 12:54

After more than 12 years in office, Labour has proved itself time and again to be a party that attacks workers’ pay, conditions, jobs and rights. And now we face the worst capitalist economic crisis for decades, with a massacre of jobs sweeping the country.

The working class in Britain does not have a party of our own to organise and inspire resistance to the bosses’ crisis on a daily basis – on the streets and in the workplaces as well as at election times.

Riot police on tour: The Times runs sick TSG PR as Tomlinson family attend vigil

02-12-2009 04:41

How the article looked before it was spiked
Last night, with phenomenally insensitive timing The Times newspaper published a puff piece aimed at rehabilitating the Metropolitan Police's Territorial Support Group, at exactly the same time as Ian Tomlinson's family were attending a candlelit vigil to remember him at Royal Exchange Buildings, near to the spot were he was attacked by a TSG officer on April 1st. The article was later pulled from The Times website, but not before copies were cached by other online news services.

In the article Chris Allison, the Met's kettler-in-chief, explained that the TSG are just misunderstood and do a lot of great work for charity...
