MediaLens: David Aaronovitch - A Different Kind Of Compassion

10-01-2008 21:53

If “The wages of sin is death”, the returns must seem altogether less bleak to Tony Blair. In November, Blair was reported to have received £237,000 for a 20-minute speech before an audience of Chinese entrepreneurs. While his salary as prime minister was £186,429 a year, it now takes him two high-profile speeches to earn the same amount. Analysts estimate that he could earn £3m simply by speaking 50 nights a year. Blair will also supplement his income as an adviser to international investment bank JP Morgan - a job that could net him £500,000 a year. This is all in addition to the £4.5m he is being paid for his memoirs.

06-01-2008 20:00

Former Daily Telegraph editor Max Hastings has been telling lies about corruption in the UK. This is a response to his article published in The Guardian Comment section (“When the powerful can live beyond the law, corruption is never far away”, Guardian, 24/12/2007). Incidentally, the Guardian deleted my comments from their website without explanation, despite their boast that “comment is free”!

Big Pharma spends more on marketing than R&D

04-01-2008 10:36

The pharmaceutical industry has long attempted to justify the unaffordablility of medicines by the high costs of research & development. Exclusion of Paul or Kucinich from "Des Moines Register" debates : Democracy ?

03-01-2008 12:03

"A "Letter from London" - to America. RE IOWA"
The free thought, integrity or passion that are often found "outside" the ( media-accepted ) mainstream are often the most crucial for that societies future, the existence of its ACTUAL democracy, its ideas about itself. . . . but this also affects the entire world, here in "typically" rainy grey london too.
From each of the two main parties, popular with their ACTUAL campaigners, you mightnt agree with the "isolationism" of Paul, or like Kucinich's exact position on the WTO, but. . . .

The History of Inquisition tells a lot about Good and Evil in the Roman Church.

26-12-2007 13:28

The Inquisition was the worst form of santified cruelty ever visited on earth.
It was sanctioned by the Vatican, and executed by the Dominicans.
No person was safe, even the great astronomer Galileo was excommunicated from the church when he stated that the earth revolved around the sun.
Burnings at the stake may be history, but how many innocent people and their Families have been left hung out to dry.

Oprah & Obama: Corporate Marketing for a Corporate Campaign

22-12-2007 10:07

Two of the best marketers in the U.S. teamed up for a three-state weekend extravaganza of vapid, substance-devoid entertainment posing as presidential politics. Oprah Winfrey – a certified genius of self-salesmanship – and the faux progressive, fraudulent anti-war candidate Barack Obama wowed crowds in South Carolina, Iowa and New Hampshire in a mega-media celebration of celebrity, itself. Political theater has devolved to theater without politics. Corporate “journalists” behave like sports “color” commentators, minus real stats and facts. Next stop: Broadway – if the world doesn’t explode before curtain-time.
