10-08-2008 18:13

Gitmo, Art, Torture, Entertainment - "Waterboard Thrill Ride" opens in NYC

07-08-2008 15:13

probably supplied by the lowest bidder - that is the capitalist way
"Waterboard Thrill Ride" is the name of an art installation by Steven Powers which has just opened in New York's Coney Island amusement park. Beckoned by a sign reading "It don't Gitmo better!" happy tourists can witness 2 robots simulate water boarding
if they put one dollar in the slot and peak through the bars..

They can then go away unhappy tourists.

3 years 2 days since the last - Mauritania has a coup.

06-08-2008 20:19

At first glance the news that the 147th richest (or 36th poorest) state on the planet with less than 4 million population has had yet another coup d'etat might not seem newsworthy. Until you realise that current European migration & "drug war" policies hinge on the amenability of the regime in the desert state.

Although the EU has only set aside €156 million of aid for 2008-2013 or roughly 54 million sterling a year - a myriad of agreements made since the last coup d'etat have allowed for the EU to start their southern border against migration in the buffer zone just the other side of our 2,720 km long security fence for Africa.

With Troops on the street, the Fascists must be in power.

05-08-2008 18:46

There has been the usual mix of resigned reactions and utterly vile apologism in English language media globally today to news that 3,000 Italian soldiers are patrolling Rome, Naples & Milan with that states police in the latest measure to "stop crime" which according to Berlusconi and crew is all caused by illegal migrants, gypsies or people who carry the gene for premature balding yet inexplicably still have a full head of virile hairy hair.

Oh yes. Especially those ones.

For so long people used the wicked word "Fascist" to describe the Italian right that it has now lost all its proper power to shock. What next they asked too many times.
So we no longer read the question marks after Camps? Striped Pyjamas? Caged Ghettoes?

El Salvador will not leave Iraq "till Iraqis control the situation"

03-08-2008 20:48

It's all very easy at times to forget that when the proper instruments of international arbitration were sidelined (UN) and systematically delegitamized (IAEA) in the lead-up to the illegal war on aggression on Iraq in 2003 the subsequent classified occupying power still being the USA, there was assembled a motley crew of states termed the "coalition of the willing".

17 of that group withdrew their troops. But plucky little El Salvador which sent 360 soldiers at the beginning will deploy its 10th contigent of 200 next week - according to a Radio broadcast today by presidente Elías Antonio Saca.

03-08-2008 19:52

The government's Orwellian-named "Central Office of Information" has been funding a series of ITV documentaries which paint their policies in a positive light. The programmes were made to look like regular documentaries, and most viewers would not have known that they were government-funded.

Human Interest angles on Karadzic's Detenion

31-07-2008 19:33

Flicking (as you do) through the online pages of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia's webpages today, since they're in the news with the trial of ex-guru faith-healer & genocidal monster Radovan Karadzic, I noticed one thing which is very different from the pages which were presented for Milosevic when he had his few days in court.

It's not that the indictment of Milosevic mentioned Karadzic and was filled with "outside players" and the indictment of Karadzic doesn't mention Milosevic and only barely touches the Yugoslav army as an outside player.

Nope. It's something much more mundane than that.

There is a whole page of "copyright waived" photographs of the detention unit for our ghoulish entertainment.
