The EU & UNESCO: Endangering Our Heritage

Two previous articles, 'Of Cups, Rings and Cultural Heritage' & 'Cultural Heritage and the Economy' (Indymedia, August 1, 2011) dealt with recent research on the Hill of Tara and Bend in the Boyne that could open a new chapter in their history, as well as that of hundreds of additional archaeological sites throughout Ireland, the UK and other Atlantic/Mediterranean European countries. More importantly, they discussed the apathy on the part of the politicians, government agencies and archaeologists in Ireland towards that research, and its potential cultural and economic benefits. In all fairness though to the aforementioned, what of the European Union and UNESCO World Heritage Centre, who are just as responsible for protecting the cultural heritage and economies of countries within the Euro Zone.

Cultural Heritage and the Economy

Considering the dismal economic state of a growing number of EU nations, it is more important than ever for them to protect their cultural heritage, as it is firmly linked to their economies in the form of tourism. Though one tends to think of cultural heritage as something taught in schools and preserved in museums, it goes well beyond that, as evidenced by the attraction of archaeological and cultural World Heritage Sites to millions around the world. Though sites such as the Bend in the Boyne and Stonehenge play a significant role in our understanding of who we are and where we came from, every site, however small, is just as important, and they deserve to be indentified, excavated, restored and preserved for future generations.

Of Cups, Rings and Cultural Heritage

The following is the first of three articles regarding cultural heritage and its potential benefits to the economies of Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and other Atlantic/Mediterranean European countries, which given the ever growing number of EU nations seeking bailouts, canʼt be ignored any longer. There are those whoʼve questioned why the cultural heritage of Ireland for example, is of such importance to someone who is a 4th generation Irish-American. The bigger question is why those whoʼve been ʻchargedʼ with protecting the cultural heritage of a nation; the archaeologists, politicians, government agencies, EU and UNESCO, have turned a blind eye to the issue.

Henry Ford with Nazi-Orden Norwegian diplomat Jens David Breivik son Anders Behring Breivik ..... Norway massacres – zionist inspired „cultural conservative“ terrorism to take Europe to civil war ......... After the Oslo bombings the western society seems to be peculiar unwilling to take notice of the background of the attacks. JUST DO IT Coming to Cambridge Arts Picturehouse Monday 18

Just Do It lifts the lid on climate activism and the daring troublemakers who have crossed the line to become modern day outlaws. With unprecedented access, Just Do It introduces you to a powerful cast of mischievous and inspiring characters who put their bodies in the way; they blockade factories, attack coal power stations and glue themselves to the trading floors of international banks despite the very real threat of arrest. Options for Dealing with Squatters

The folks at the Ministry of Justice have today launched their 'consultation' document about new laws how to 'deal with' squatters. It asks for the views of "anyone affected by squatters or [who] has experience of using the current law or procedures to get them evicted." They don't seem too interested in what the squatters have to say.

'Just Do It' - Review

Review of the film 'just do it', which will be coming to cinemas next week. The film documents the environmental protest movement over the last three years. Its revealing and exciting, with lots of live footage of direct action and action planning not available in any mainstream media. It does, however, focus more on actions than the politics and organisation behind these actions, which are ignored or simplified. definitely watch it.

Thousands turn out against EDL in Cambridge. Part 2

F.I.T. Watched. Unlike them though, I publish what I shoot. The police were careful to keep both demos very separate, and went to great lengths (and doubtless great expense, including keeping the copper chopper in the sky all afternoon), to ensure that each demo happened at opposite ends of town.

Thousands turn out against EDL in Cambridge. Part 1

Even a clown turned up! Last Saturday (July 9th, 2011), the people of Cambridge voted en masse with their feet and took to the streets in response to their city being paid a visit by the English Defence League (EDL).

The EDL, who despite most of them having commuted into the town for their own demo on the same day, claimed to speak on behalf of the people of Cambridge by raising objections to plans to build a Mosque and Community Centre at the far end of Mill Road, to replace the smaller overcrowded one on Mawson Road.

J30 actions come to Cambridge (part 2).

Heading up East Road, Cambridge... The true scale of the march through Cambridge couldn't be seen until everyone set out to walk through town, and it was a glorious site to behold.

At one point, I saw it stretch from one end of East Road to the other, with still enough of a head to snake it's way around the corner onto Burleigh Street.

In Cambridge this was represented by many schools closing, a skeleton staff at Cambridge Jobcentre, and picket lines in front of Cambridge Regional College and Anglia Ruskin University (see pictures).

NATO: Invasion of Libya

cowboy-gangster-style robbery Libya as a new litmus test if the “21st Century Law of the Jungle“ will prevail ..... Arrival of the “21st Century cowboy gangster-style” imperialism instead the much-anticipated co-prosperous multipolar world of mutually-respecting, democratically consensus-building, respectfully dialoguing, non-interfering of sovereign nations’ internal affairs ... Libya seems going to be a new litmus test for the immediate future of 21st Century international relations if, by any means necessary, the US-led NATO in the form of multinational “cowboy[i] gangster[ii]-style robbery[iii]” completes its extremely greedy and hypocritical goals in a immensely natural and financial resource-rich North African nation.
