Another attempt to remove, Kemi, Taiwo & Yasmin

The family are currently detained in Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre and due to be forcibly removed from the UK to Nigeria on Tuesday 8th July on Virgin Nigeria Airways flight VK292 from Gatwick to Lagos at 10.15hrs. This will be the second attempt to remove the family.

Starbucks gets a picket from london syndicalists

Today London Solidarity Federation joined with London IWW to picket starbucks in support of their sacked members in Spain and America. Organising a union, like these CNT and IWW comrades did, imroves your pay and conditions - and that is the last things Starbucks want to see. Poor pay and apalling contracts goes hand in hand with a policy of aggressive expansion, so more and more people will be forced to work these McJobs.

Striking tube cleaners intimidated

Tube cleaners’ union RMT has demanded an end to “appalling intimidation“ of members involved in a 48-hour strike for a living wage on, one on July 1st-3rd. Tube cleaners also engaged in a 24-hour strike on June 25th-26th.

Council workers to strike over pay

Unison
On July 16th and 17th, thousands of council workers will strike over a below inflation 2.45% pay rise (i.e. a real terms pay cut). Members of Unison and Unite (T&G) working in council offices, schools, libraries and leisure centres will walk out for two days, with the possibility of further action in the future. In Nottinghamshire the two unions represent around 16,000 workers.

30 year old Rebecca Lutayakamya and her son Darren from Uganda, have been in detention since Tuesday 29th April. They are currently in Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre and are due to be forcibly removed from the UK to Uganda on Thursday 3rd July on British Airways flight BA63 to Entebbe at 21:10.

Pedro Fernando: 20 Months in detention - 20 months too long

Pedro Fernando, originally from Cabinda/Angola, turned 21 and then 22 in an immigration removal centre. I met him just after his 21st birthday which I only realized by looking through some of the papers he had given me.

US trade union activist and convener of US Labor Against War, Gene Bruskin will be speaking in London this Monday. His home is currently at risk of repossession under mafia legislation being used to try and break the United Food and Commerical Services Union which he works for - see the story here  http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/18/business/main3379852.shtml

Alongside him will be Iraqi oil expert Kamil Mahdi, who was in Basra last year for an anti-privatisation conference organised by the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions.
