I Stand by the River: a film showing about race and class in the US, 11 July

Ideas for Freedom | 03.07.2008 15:47 | Globalisation | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | London | South Coast

As part of Ideas for Freedom, the annual weekend of socialist discussion and debate, we will be showing "I Stand by the River", a film about the Memphis refuse workers' strike which Martin Luther King was supporting when he was assassinated in 1968.

7pm, Friday 11 July
The Bread & Roses, 68 Clapham Manor Street, London SW4 6DZ (Clapham Common tube)

At a time when a major American bourgeois party, the Democrats, is standing a black candidate for president for the first time, the lessons of the civil rights struggles of the 1960s are crucial for those who want to overthrow race, class and all other forms of oppression.

US socialist activist Kim Moody, the former editor of rank-and-file labour movement publication labour Labor Notes (www.labornotes.org), will speak about race and class struggle in the US - in 1968 and today.

Come and join us for this unique film, for a lively discussion and for a social to open the Ideas for Freedom weekend.
