Urgent action to protect babies in the Philippines
07-11-2006 14:12
This is an alert sent to Baby Milk Action supporters announcing a campaign launched today to help protect babies and mothers in the Philippines from the aggressive marketing of baby foods. Efforts to regulate the baby food companies to stop breastfeeding from being undermined and to ensure breastmilk substitutes are used safely if necessary are being threatened by legal action from US companies and pressure on the President from the US Chamber of Commerce.1.3 million people march in Oaxaca

06-11-2006 16:00
. . . . the recent attempt to backspin the "war" factor involved the odd delay to a less than surprising verdict in the Iraqi dictators courtcase (- the judge- swapped a couple of weeks ago too-), as a strangely conditioned seeming act in the dock - waving koran, shouting against invaders, collaborators, etc - timed for USA wake-up TVnews, tried to pretend that old terrorist tie-in to legitimise the entire mess. .Full article | 3 additions | 2 comments

STITCHING UP DEMOCRACY: the "war inquiry" debate: what it took to "fix" it
01-11-2006 12:46
Democracy "reflects the majority opinion in the population. The percentage of British people that think the iraq war was a "stitch up" is certainly over 50 % ( - in the USA too, so with mid-term elections approaching, thats a factor) . . . . So, when all the "opposition" factions unite around a vote for a near immediate inquiry into how this came about, with lots of people in the square, showing support. . . . ?“Iraqis were better off under Saddam”

The rise and fall of the UN
30-10-2006 18:20
One’s opinion of the United Nations reveals a lot about political consciousness; and because perception is usually based on experience, it’s only natural that people from different countries have opposing views about the UN and its pillar institutions— the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). In the United States, familiarity of the UN is limited to vague notions of ‘international democracy’ and ‘peacekeeping’, words that inspire the noblest of intentions; the World Bank and IMF on the other hand are institutions that invoke little reaction among the US public. How and by whom the UN was formed, whose interests it serves, and the actual history of its ‘peacekeeping’ missions are all things rarely examined. It is the purpose of this essay to look at the formation and development of the UN, and in so doing, attempt to show the evolution of the capitalistic system itself, which was ‘reborn’ upon the back of these hardly-neutral organizations.Rising Tide: UK Stern Report Sells Climate Short, Paves Way to Global Disaster
30-10-2006 16:21
Today the international climate justice movement condemned a major new policy advisory from the United Kingdom on the economics of climate change. Named "The Stern Review" after its chief author Sir Nicholas Stern, climate activists warn that this 700-page analysis offers a dangerously inadequate and deceptive plan that will lead to inevitable global warming catastrophe if its recommendations are followed. "Although climate scientists are in nearly unanimous agreement that atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide must be limited to no more than 450 parts per million in order to avoid catastrophic climate chaos, the new UK report calls for CO2 emissions to be stabilized at the much higher rate of 500 to 550 ppm," said Ethan Green, coordinator of the Counter-G8 Working Group of Rising Tide North America.Palestinian film screening
