Support Needed: Calais Migrant Food Project 8-21st July

22-06-2013 18:29

Nottingham Migrant Solidarity is a group that aims to offer practical support to migrants on the France/UK border. Hundreds of people face destitution, brutality and harassment every day in Calais and most are fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries. We are a self-organised group who plan to give out free food to migrants in Calais between the 8th and 22nd July. In the months of July and August the charities who usually provide food are closed. This makes it imperative that groups such as ourselves distribute food during this period.

The Story of the Regime

22-06-2013 13:59

Before the revolution there was famine, massacre and death
Avoidable suffering, forced austerity and the regime
And there were people who could not forget
That most of its lifetime
Humanity lived without these scourges
But other people could not remember
Because most of their lifetime
It did not occur to them.

6 torched vehicles at UKBA crime team building & Tascor transporters smashed

22-06-2013 12:09

Hidden inside a quiet business park in Portishead, just outside Bristol, is a UK Border Agency office from where an immigration crime team work with police, including launching raids in the south-west. We visited Thursday night into Friday (with the death of anarchist Carlo Guiliani in combat with police during the G8 summit 12 years ago still fresh in our minds) to set fires that damaged the building and burnt 6 vehicles stationed there - 3 cars, 2 blacked-out people carrier vans (known to be used for dawn snatches of immigrant family groups) and 1 large van. The border regime mercenaries draw the attention of our total contempt the same as any other cop does, and now this long arm of the State has felt that we are close and we don't stop.

[In Brazil] We are writing History!

22-06-2013 02:49

"We carry a new world here, in our hearts. That world is growing in this minute." - Buenaventura Durruti

After spending the last few days in São Paulo, I return to Florianópolis with all my thoughts taken up by the subject that has monopolized conversations in the city: the demonstrations of the Free Pass Movement. I do not know exactly whether it was by choice or due to the necessities of life (perhaps a mix of the two) that I left São Paulo to live in the capital of Santa Catarina, but the truth is that despite more than 5½ years that have gone by, I have never broken the political and emotional ties that tie me to São Paulo, ties which are now stronger than ever because of the political situation the city is going through.

I hope the colder and more impersonal among you will forgive me, but I was never able to hide my emotions. The truth is that today I can no longer think without using my heart. Even the quotation up there must have sounded a bit "tacky". But I bet there are many more besides me who also feel the same emotion.

Mansfield Strong infilitrated by EDL

21-06-2013 18:55

This Sunday, a number of “Strong” events will take place around the country. These events have been organised as a response to the murder of Lee Rigby and are supposed to be against extremism but many have been hijacked by the EDL, the neo-Nazi Infidels and the BNP. Nottingham Strong fell apart after it was exposed as being an EDL front group. A Mansfield Strong event, which seems to have wider support, is still going ahead.

However, the Mansfield event still has extensive links with the EDL. Whilst the Nottingham and Mansfield EDL divisions have learnt from previous exposure not to openly promote the event, the EDL’s Mansfield organiser is involved in organising Mansfield Strong and many local EDL activists from across the region will be attempting to infiltrate the event on the day.

Stan Green, the Mansfield EDL organiser, has made numerous posts on the Mansfield Strong page suggesting that he is involved in the organising meetings and in logistics on the day. Stan, once a key member of the East Midlands Infidels, has been to numerous EDL demos with the East Midlands divisions. On his Facebook profile he describes himself as “ENGLISH DEFENCE LEAGUE.MANSFIELD DIVISION” and has shared photos promoting the more openly Nazi group Infidels of Britain.

As well as EDL activists being involved in organising the event, quite a few have said they will be turning up on the day. These include Nottingham’s Chris Payne and Nicky Long who were convicted of anti-Muslim public order offences for leaving a pig’s head at the site of a mosque in West Bridgford. Payne urged the organisers of Mansfield Strong to inbox him, presumably wanting to get further involved in the event.

No far right mobilisation would be complete without former EDL speaker and currently Midlands organiser for the English National Resistance, Tony Curtis, making an appearance. Keen to piggyback on something with more than a handful of people involved, Curtis has declared his support for the event. Other EDL activists saying they will come include Adam Bilyk (Nottingham), Dave Stokoe (Long Eaton), Ian Gilbert (Alfreton), Kev Coates (Mansfield), Tip James (Mansfield) and Tracie Bird (Derbyshire).

These exploitative infiltrations are not limited to the Midlands. Brighton Anti-fascists have documented the close links between the Brighton Strong event and the local EDL division. We do not believe these are the only events where there is secret far right involvement.

In the aftermath of the murder of Lee Rigby, his family have pleaded for groups like the far right EDL not to exploit his death. The armed forces charity, Hope for Heroes, has refused to accept donations from the EDL in order to distance themselves from the group’s anti-Muslim politics. In spite of these wishes, the EDL continues to attempt to exploit the tragic murder of Lee Rigby in order to recruit people to events and spread anti-Muslim conspiracy theories. Whether they are setting up Facebook pages to lure people into their sphere of influence or organising memorial events, far right activists have shamefully used Rigby’s murder to expand their political influence.

We ask the other organisers of Mansfield Strong to resist attempts by the EDL to infiltrate their event. We hope that they make it clear that the EDL and other far right groups are not welcome.

Technology out of control? Drones, Killer Robots and the Arms Trade

21-06-2013 13:17

Remote controlled drones have already caused many civilian casualties in the ‘war on terror’, and people in the target zones and in Britain are campaigning against their use. But the military is moving towards letting battlefield ‘killer robots’ take their own decisions without human input. Should we allow computers to decide who lives and who dies, and who is legally responsible for their actions? This first meeting in our ‘Breaking the Frame’ series on the politics of technology will address some of the ethical and ‘existential’ issues raised by the march of technocracy. There will be plenty of time for informal discussion.

Brazil Is Kicking Off...BTW!

21-06-2013 11:36

It appears that the situation in Brazil has not yet attracted a proper mention on the news feed of IndyMedia, so I thought I had better bring it to peoples attention, in case for some reason, they had not heard that hundreds of thousands of people have been protesting in hundreds of towns and cities against corruption, the stupendous costs of the world cup next year and the olympics two years later.

UG#649 - Why Money Will End (And How To Prepare)

21-06-2013 07:30

Audio
This week, a special show featuring a 2-hour made-for-radio commentary on a recent presentation entitled Why Money Will End — And What to Do About It. Does a life beyond money have to be unthinkable? Or is it just that a highly funded campaign is trying to make it seem so? What if it was "bu$ine$$ as usual" that was in reality unthinkable, and there was a more beautiful world of abundance awaiting us, once enough people have the courage to say goodbye to money and its scarcity-inducing story of selfishness and separation?...
