When cops are robbers - dayx
29-11-2010 11:22
Who should you call when you are robbed, assaulted or abused? Who should you call when the it's the cops who did it? On November 24th the newly formed Green & Black Cross legal support team sent a banner to for the DayX student protests against the governments austerity cuts. All it said was '"No Comment' Sholegal support 07946541511, twitter @GBCLegal for legal updates. GBCLegal@riseup.net". Basically it was a very summarised version of the bust cards distributed among the crowd which outlined peoples legal rights regarding being stopped or arrested by police. However, ironically perhaps, the cops took offense to the banner and stole it without any explanation when those carryi g it were finally released from the kettle on Whitehall late in the evening. Stealing the banner is just one minor example of how the police frequently abuse the powers entrusted to them. While the government and mainstream media seem content to let the cops get away with lies, theft, assault etc, we are not! We aim to make sure that all those attending upcoming protests are aware of their basic rights and able to access legal support should they need it. Don't let the cops get away with murder, please help to make sure that bust cards and the legal support number are well distributed. These are volunteer legal observers planning on attending protests but please make sure that you also act as witnesses. If you see and arrest or assault then please let us know. Be sure to record the shoulder numbers of the cops involved, along with time, place and contact details for other witnesses. Please encourage people to follow @GBCLEgal on twitter for legal updates during the protests.Police say "think of the children" in student protest
