10-12-2010 17:23
At Midday on the Thursday the 9th December, the day that Westminster was looking set to vote in new reforms to bring in hike university fees in England to an obscene £9000 a year, students in Glasgow came out to show solidarity and protest cuts to Scottish education spending and the austerity measures

London Tuition Fees Demonstration (09/12/2010) - Part 1
10-12-2010 17:22

Here starts my coverage of events as I witnessed them yesterday. Because what happened at Parlaiment Square turned to be such a turning point in the demo, I have decided to divide this report into two sections, with this first section covering what happened before we reached Parlaiment Square.
Do you still support the students after all their rioting?

Free Bradley Manning
10-12-2010 13:22
PFC Bradley Manning is a 22-year-old US Army soldier accused of leaking classified information while serving as an intelligence analyst in Iraq. Manning has been in custody since May of 2010, and is currently facing up to 52 years in prison.Specifically, Manning is suspected of leaking the “Collateral Murder” video to the whistleblower web site WikiLeaks, which shows a US helicopter killing unarmed Iraqi civilians and Reuters journalists. He has also been charged with leaking classified Department of State cables, and is considered a person of interest in WikiLeaks’ “Afghan War Diary”.
The case has garnered much public debate, both supporters and detractors. Daniel Ellsberg, who released the infamous Pentagon Papers in 1971, has been quoted as saying, “If [Manning] has done what he is alleged to have done, I congratulate him.” On the other side, a Republican US congressman has been calling for Manning to be executed if found guilty, and he has been smeared by anti-gay groups like the Family Research Council as proof that allowing gays to serve in the military undermines America’s safety.
As of August 2010, Manning remains in solitary confinement at a military brig in Quantico, Virginia. He has been cut off from his family and friends, unable to even receive letters from his supporters around the world. Any prison is a frightening, lonely place- and Manning likely has a long ordeal ahead of him.
Whether ultimately found innocent or convicted of his charges, Bradley Manning is a brave young man who needs our support, and deserves to be freed. If he’s innocent of all charges, he’s a casualty in the Obama administration’s war on whistleblowers, and if convicted, he’s a hero for exposing war crimes and the true civilian costs of our wars in the Middle East.
Nobel Peace Prize Petiton: Julian Assange
10-12-2010 13:19

He is currently under lock and key in the UK, on trumped-up charges widely seen as an excuse to get him into captivity with the aim of discouraging further disclosures of information which it is so evidently in the public interest to disclose. An award of a Nobel Peace Prize to this courageous man would recognize his contribution to justice and would encourage further leaks of information from those who are considering revealing facts but who might otherwise decide not to. An online petition has been launched, urging the Norwegian Nobel Committee to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Julian Assange. ..........

Pictures from the start of the student march
10-12-2010 11:22
The march started at 12 at Malet Street and promptly stopped by its self proclaimed leaders to give speeches, Coalition of Resistance, Revolution, NUS, MP's ... although one nice interlude by Ben Ocre the novelist who read a poem.
The march went then to wards Southampton Row about 8,000 strong picking up more people along the way. Once on the move south towards the Strand the pace picked up and the police and stewards lost control, having to jog along side the students panting and shouting.
A large group made its way off towards Covent garden - through the back streets and then returned, by now most people were running whilst dazzled tourists and shoppers watched in amazement. Large groups were darting off in any direction and the Police attempts to contain the excitement clearly had failed.
The designated route through Trafalgar Square and one behind Whitehall between St James Park and Horse Guards Parade, was very relaxed as people slowed down, cheered, and started dancing as they went to the sound systems.
The route closed towrds the corner of Parliament Square, with police now along both sides of the demo, and the atmosphere started to change as peopel realised they were walking into a possible giant kettle.
Once in The square the police seemed to be blocking all routes leaving the students with no choice, with the growing numbers, but to move through the barriers and onto the centre of the square. This is where the first few scuffles took place with the police sending out very confusing messages - "continue to victoria embankment" although they had blocked it". So the square filled up quickly and the crowd decided to stay and party.
From that point there were a series of confrontations along the side of Parliament, and wen it looked like the police had kettled the whole demonstration, there were many sussessful attempts to break through the lines forming around us.
At this point in the Victoria Street corner of the square 15 police horses charged into the crowd, followed by an indiscriminate baton charge. And the fighting really started... The rest i guess was all over the TV and no doubt this mornings papers, edited and directed against the message of the march.

Dubstep rebellion - the British banlieue comes to Millbank
10-12-2010 10:22
Paul Mason is BBC Newsnight’s economics editor. His blog entry stands alone from the total mass of shit that the BBC came out with during their live broadcast where the running commentary and the images clearly were out of step. Mason really gets to grips with the composition and anger of yesterdays crowd. As was widely shown on TV yesterday in an interview with some young people, the kids doing most of the fighting back described themselves as 'coming from the slums of London'.
