Far right humiliated in Nottingham

31-03-2013 14:55

In spite of national call outs and attendances by the North West Infidels, Paul Pitt of the South East Alliance, Casuals United, the English National Resistance, Nottingham EDL and the EVF, barely a dozen people bothered turning up for Tony Curtis’ demo at Nottingham Uni yesterday. After plotting up at a nearby Toby carvery the pitiful crowd weren’t even allowed onto the campus and had to stand around in the road outside listening to Tone the Moan. Casuals United reckon they go where they want but as usual they meekly went exactly where the police wanted them. They didn’t get close to the event they were supposed to be protesting or speak to the general public so the whole thing was a waste of time.

This is further proof that without the EDL these hangers on are nothing. It looks impressive to have alliances of about 10 different groups until you realise that each group has about 3 people in it and most of them are keyboard warriors. These big mouths spend more time designing elaborate logos and posting on Facebook than actually doing anything in the real world.

This is the second humiliation this week for Curtis who foolishly thought he could hold his own against “the left” on Indymedia. When his badly thought through arguments were torn to shreds he quickly surrendered, pretending he’d been banned, even though as one commenter pointed out, you can’t be banned from Indymedia. As one poster noted “typical fascist, making loads of noise but unable to back it up when effectively challenged”.

Part of Curtis’ whingeing was about being called a racist. Well here’s a tip – if you don’t want people to think you’re a racist it’s probably best not to give Nazis a hug. Curtis was recently pictured with his arm around Shane Calvert, leader of the NWI who are notorious for calling for the killing of “Pakis”, the gassing of Jews and murdering of immigrants. Calvert was recently in attendance at the neo-Nazi White Pride Worldwide event and regularly does demos alongside the National Front. Other NWI activists include Liam Pinkham, who likes to pose in jackboots giving a stiff-armed salute.

Zoo Awareness Weekend: Twycross Zoo on Sunday

31-03-2013 14:55

On Easter Sunday, activists from Nottingham Animal Rights, Derby Animal Rights and Leicester Animal Rights, converged on Twycross zoo to protest the cruel incarceration of animals from around the world, as part of the Captive Animal Protection Society's zoo awareness weekend

On Easter Sunday, activists from Nottingham Animal Rights, Derby Animal Rights and Leicester Animal Rights, converged on Twycross zoo to protest the cruel incarceration of animals from around the world, as part of the Captive Animal Protection Society's zoo awareness weekend.

Policing was understated and proportionate and none of the zoo staff caused any trouble.

For this highly visual event, one activist dressed up as a Gorilla in chains, and another as an elephant in a cage.

Hundreds of leaflets were given out, and the response from the public was generally positive.

Many people do not realize the animal suffering inherent in Zoos and Aquariums, where animals used to forests, seas and the sky are trapped in cages, concrete enclosures and glass tanks where there routinely go mad from boredom, frustration and the absence of the natural environment they have evolved to depend on.

Zoos may claim to contribute to conservation, but in reality only a small percentage of Zoo animals are endangered and only an even smaller percentage of those are successfully released back into the wild. Meanwhile they divert funds away from where the real effort is needed - habitat conservation.

Don't be fooled by the marketing, the purpose of Zoos is to make money for shareholders and they do so at the animal's expense.

For more information on Zoos and CAPS' valuable work, see http://www.captiveanimals.org/

March of discontent: lessons in work struggles (Italy)

30-03-2013 20:43

The working class is awakening, and the mobilisations of the last few days among the logistics sector workers in Emilia Romagna are the first signs. Recently, we have seen two different images of work struggles: the Peugeot workers in Paris clashing with the police on one hand; and the sad, resigned-looking picket organised by Fiom outside a Fiat establishment in Italy, on the other hand. Both are fighting for their jobs, but the differences are clearly visible and stimulate many diverse reflections. The French workers’ determination in defense of their rights and dignity has spread to the Italian logistics sector workers’ mobilisation on March 22, and manifested in their determination to defeat the enemy. Workers of different backgrounds and origins, Italians and migrants, have united against the exploitation carried on by the worker cooperative owners and the main worker cooperative, the Coop.

This week is something of a continuation of episode #624, featuring the second part of economics professor Richard Wolff on Marxian class analysis, and we approach the end of David Graeber's Debt, The First 5000 Years. I hope it works as an aid to help to rethink what you think you know about economics and politics and to jettison any categories of thought which you find unhelpful.

UG#626 - Where Communism Meets Capitalism (TPPA, Marxian Class Analysis 3)

29-03-2013 17:33

Audio
This episode we note some similarities between the so called extreme 'left' and 'right' ends of the political spectrum - when the government claims the ability to unilaterally decide how to run things, the stated ideology often goes by the board anyway. Bryan Gould discusses the confidential 'trade agreement' TPP, noting that it is less about free trade and more about subduing national sovereignty to the multinational corporations who devised it. In our second hour, we continue with Richard Wolff's Marxian class analysis, looking specifically at the 1917 Russian revolution.

UG#627 - The Progressive Process of Desocialization (Marxian Class Analysis 4)

29-03-2013 17:28

Audio
This week, two Marxist professors speak on the social impact of capitalism and especially in USA. First, Silvia Federici speaks on 'The Progressive Process of Desocialization', how capitalism breaks down communities and people's human relationships of care. Next it is the turn of Richard Wolff who applies his Marxian class analysis to the US household, noting that more and more adults are rejecting the traditional (feudal) model of domestic exploitation and either living alone or in more egalitarian patterns.
