1 N30 The March - Events in Nottingham

02-12-2011 20:55

Wednesday 30th November 2011

10.30am gathering at the Forest ground formed up ready to march to the Albert Hall, Nottingham

This demonstration was called by a number of public service unions complaining about their future pension arrangements.  However, many of us think it's about much more than that!

Leaving at 11.30am, going down the well troden route down the Mansfield Road, and onto Upper Parliament Street. Down to the Market Square and onto the Playhouse courtyard / Albert Hall. The  march grew to between 6 - 10,000 [depending on who you talk to of course].

The marchers passed the occupation camp in the Market Square [its been there for over 6 weeks now], with much cheering and support shown.

At the destination, people went into the Albert Hall to listen to speeches from union officials, many more watched the large video screen erected in the Nottingham Playhouse Courtyard.

This was the biggest demonstration I've seen in Nottingham.  Obviously, on its own not enough to change government policies ..... but it might be considered a fair start.

Later in the afternoon, the camp hosted a seminar by Prof Samik Amin.  Arriving from Egypt to talk to students at the University of Nottingham. The strike prevented this so he came to talk at the camp instead.  His theme; to discuss the objects and progress of the Egyptian Revolution and some wider implications. {sound file should be under that posting}.

In the evening the occupation cam was entertained by a band of stolling players from Malta :-)  Cable35 http://www.cable35.co

Todays characters also included a dragon and tiger. Well .... kids dressed up anyway:-)

Occupy: From forum and movement to political force

02-12-2011 19:36

Direct democracy must become more than debate and agreeing policy in groups. Voting once every few years for an MP is a very ineffective way to run our public affairs. In order to achieve genuine reforms we must introduce those "tools" of citizen-led democracy which can enable us to steer policy continually. For this, regulations must first be drafted for Parliament, leading to a "Democracy Act" which establishes rule by the people.

Is the West hunting for a pretext for a war on Iran?

02-12-2011 19:35

The Guardian, 30 November 2011
A string of attacks on Iran, from assassinations of key nuclear and military personnel to attempts to alienate it internationally, ring the bell. Could it be that the US, UK, the EU and Israel are working hard to gather winds of war against Iran, knowing full well that their credibility is at an all-time low following years of flagrant lying to justify attacks on Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and more recently Libya? Attacking Iran won’t be easy to pull off.

Trouble at Morton Hall IRC

02-12-2011 18:55

Detainees at Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre in Lincolnshire have been experiencing lengthy periods of lock down since 24th Nov. The following communications have been received from detainees.

Petition signed by 61 detainees against lock down on 24th and 25th November:

We residents of Morton Hall have compiled the following reasons due to unfair treatment by Morton Hall Directors and Staff:
On 24th November 2011: Detainees failed to have access to buying credit to call their legal representatives, family and friends due to unlawful lock up from 2030hrs 24th of November till 1630hrs 25th November.

When directors were confronted by detainees as why the Lock up was placed, they mentioned that they needed to do cell check up, something that took them the whole day and afternoon.

On the 25th November 2011: Detainees on Fry Unit were locked up without prior notice as to why: Again when Directors were asked why they had done so the answer was because of health and safety risk of a fallen bin bag in the corridors, something that could have been done overnight by night staff.
We demand justification for such excuses, as we are not prisoners. We failed to call our families and representatives due to unfair lock up, without prior notice of the actions.
---
On 30th Nov staff claimed to have found evidence of an escape attempt and all visits to the centre were  suspended. Detainees were locked down for a further 48 hours. A second petition was circulated:

We the detainees were subject to Lock down on 30.11.2011 earlier then usual time as some detainee peacefully protested by the astro (Football ) where detainee protested as earlier on 30.11.2011 detainee Vassell were attacked by gang of officer and taken to RFA.

During the protest about 30 detainee stayed out for 30 minutes then the detainees came to individual room.

Early in the morning of 01.12.2011 we were given first of the notice to detainee  to our shock it stated an attempted escape were discovered and  2 member of staff were assaulted.

Then through out the day detainees were taken to different HMP (Namly Lincoln and Nottingham and other HMP)

Only 2 detainees were sent to different detention centre one to Dover and one to Colnbrook.

Such was Unlawful lock up against detention service order authorised by the parliament.

What Wrexham might look like divided by an Apartheid wall
Yesterday I went along to a talk by Ann Farr of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel organised by Wrexham CYTÛN (Churches Together in Wales). Ann has visited Palestine and Israel several times previously through her work with the Catholic peace organisation Pax Christi. In December 2010, she returned to Palestine for three months to work as an Ecumenical Accompanier (EA). EAs provide protective presence to vulnerable communities, monitor and report human rights abuses and support Palestinians and Israelis working together for peace.
