Fracking Demo: Frack Off Cuadrilla

21-09-2011 22:55

Anti-fracking protesters congregate outside the press conference in Blackpool held by Cuadrilla Resources as they announce the results of their drilling for shale gas tests in Lancashire, holding a massive Frack Off banner and chanting abuse at the company through a megaphone...

Today Cuadrilla announced that they've found 200 trillion cubic feet of gas held in rocks under the ground, which is 10 times more than UK reserves in the North Sea. Not all of this can be 'fracked' out - a process which involves pumping millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals in order to crack rock 9,000ft underground (for more info see frack-off.org) - but Mark Miller (toxic water spiller) CEO of Cuadrilla says "We're equivalent to - or exceeding - the gas per square mile that you'd find in the really successful plays in the US."

Fracking has been a major disaster in the US with the industry booming massively over the last several years without intervention, leading to a series of catastrophes relating to water contamination, toxic spills, blow outs, water you can set on fire, and more pollution into the biosphere, mainly methane.

Cuadrilla already has plans for 400 gas wells, across 40 sites, with its current exploration license granted by the government, which covers the Bowland shale between Blackpool and Preston. If all goes well for the company, we could be looking at tens of thousands of gas rigs in Lancashire alone, that's 20-30 per square mile.

Fracking is the thin end of the wedge in the drive to suck the last and most difficult to reach drops of fuel from the planet. The scramble for unconventional sources of gas is the beginning of the end of our finite resources (along with: tar sands, mountain top removal, deep water drilling, coal bed methane etc etc).

Fracking must be stopped.

Nothing will happen without pressure. Get informed, get organised and take action.

Unite Official Slams "Cancerous" Electricians' Resistance

21-09-2011 16:57

Bernard McAulay thinks rank-and-filers who challenge him are "cancerous"
This morning, electricians briefly occupied a construction site in Farringdon, London, as part of their rank-and-file organised campaign against wage cuts of up to 35%. However, a leaked email has shown the contempt which Unite union tops hold for the aspirations of their own membership.

Siteworker, Unite & Bernard McAulay

21-09-2011 14:55

Unite union officials have attacked construction workers for their opposition to a national 35% pay cut.

More info on the dispute:

http://libcom.org/forums/news/electricians-protests-19092011

The following email was leaked:

15/09/2011

Good Morning Gail,

Reference to our telephone conversation last night on the above, could l kindly refer you to the attached correspondence.

As your aware the construction section is likely to be engaged in a major industrial dispute going into the autumn, due to a decision taken by the Eight Major employers in the Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical sector of the industry.

On the 17th August the national shop stewards forum met and agreed a way forward by developing our campaign strategy on a regional basis working in conjunction with the appropriate Unite Regional Officer.

Initially a group of activist decided to form a Rank and File campaign committee nominating Gerry Hicks to be there Chairman, resulting in Gerry travelling the country addressing meetings attacking not only the Employers but more importantly our Union's leadership and the capability of the Unite Officers.

The constant scurrilous attacks on officials by this small fringe group does have an impact on our campaign, as this cancerous group are simply opportunist's and extremely divisive when making there contribution at meetings, especially when fellow colleagues and members challenge these individuals, results in these individuals submitting unnecessary and frivolous complaints to the General Secretary, resulting in officers been investigated and tied up in preparing reports to defend themselves, which is time consuming and a unnecessary waste of an officers time.

My colleague Bill Green is working extremely hard in the Newcastle and l find the circular by the Newcastle Branch to be another unwarranted attack by individuals who have no intentions of working and supporting Unite in this campaign as they seek publicist which is a an unwarranted distraction at this moment in time.

My colleagues will not throw away this wonderful opportunity the employers have given us to re engage with the workers in the industry as opposed to becoming involved in this poisonous campaign by these mindless individuals who will simply hide by the Union's Equality policy.

Kind regards

Bernard McAulay

National Officer for Construction

Experiences of a legal observer at Dale Farm

21-09-2011 11:05

Just back from a few nights at Dale Farm. I was on legal observer duty Monday morning 7am - 1pm. Most of it was spent on the gate scaffold observing the bailiffs rearranging their offices, then - when they realised we could see everything - they ordered in a new container to block our view. Not many police around apart from the helicopter. A few tense times when the bailiffs twice put their coffee cups down and organised themselves into groups: once they actually approached the gate but retreated after reading the notice about the lock-in.

Travellers and supporters work together to open up Dale Farm

21-09-2011 10:32

Travellers and supporters at Dale Farm will work together on Wednesday morning from 11:30 am to move barricades that are blocking access to the site [1]. The residents want to enable families to bring their trailers back on to their plots, and to enable access for emergency vehicles, but will oppose any attempt at entry by bailiffs.

The barricades were constructed to prevent Basildon Council from demolishing the homes and land of residents who have been living on the site for over ten years. The last minute reprieve caused by the High Court injunction left the site blockaded with gates, lock-ons and vans preventing access.
