Flashback: One person’s account of a train action – From DSEI 2003

09-09-2011 18:44

We were a small affinity group of about eight, that wanted to take action against the DSEI 2003 arms fair but were unable to take an action together that involved lots of preparation, and the train action was ideal. It turned out to be straightforward, effective and VERY replicable.

How I (nearly) got into an arms trade conference

09-09-2011 18:09

How shameless is the government’s arms sales unit? Even as ordinary people across the Middle East are laying down their lives in the struggle for democracy, UKTI DSO organises a seminar to help arms companies to sell weapons to the repressive regimes of the region.

The event was called Middle East: A vast market for defence and security companies, it was presented by London Chamber of Commerce, and it was to be hosted in the City of London by Royal Bank of Scotland. (The very same RBS that Amnesty International recently forced to stop financing the makers of cluster bombs.)

issues go back to his childhood days where he experienced sexual abuse

Noise protest outside Cedars detention centre

09-09-2011 16:55

This afternoon activists from NoBorders and No One is Illegal held a noise demonstration outside Cedars, a detention centre for nine families and their children in Pease Pottage, Sussex, which opened last week.

The activists gathered outside the front gates (metal fencing with a perspex cover) with a banner denouncing Barnardo's involvement in the detention industry (the charity is running "social and welfare services" at the detention centre). They chanted through a loudspeaker and made noise with various instruments. They also walked part of the way round the perimeter fence, continuing to remonstrate loudly against detention and deportation.

There were guards in hi-vis vests in the grounds of the centre, and a UKBA guard was also spotted. There was no sign of any of the detainees.

As the activists left the centre they were stopped by police under the pretext of "anti-social behaviour".

The activists stated that protests will continue until Cedars closes.

Why I put myself back in the dock over Fortnum’s

09-09-2011 15:41

On 26th March, I was arrested, along with 144 other people, for sitting down in Fortnum and Mason, in protest at their tax avoidance scheme, which costs taxpayers nearly £10m per year.

On the 18th July, my case was dropped, along with around 100 others, leaving 30 defendants to be tried (some were never charged, and youth defendants had already had cases dropped in case you are confused about the missing numbers). On Sept 7th, the Fortnum145 defence campaign revealed that 21 of us have decided to revive our case.
