Nottingham EDL organiser poses with a gun

01-09-2011 19:55

A recent expose of the English Defence League by Hope not Hate features a photo of James Clarke, described as Nottingham EDL Organiser, posing with a weapon. The article shows no fewer than 15 EDL members all posing with firearms, including Joel Titus, the EDL's Youth Leader. The far right have always loved guns and posing like hardmen but in the wake of the Norway massacre this takes on a more chilling aspect (not least because there were links between Anders Behring Breivik and the EDL).

After the Norway massacre, EDL leader Stephen Lennon (AKA Tommy Robinson) warned that the UK was only 5 years away from a similar massacre here. For a group that has always claimed to be against violent extremism the EDL is finding its own links to violent far right terrorism harder and harder to hide. The British state has decided to monitor them with the counter terror unit.

Much thought I dislike the agenda of Hope not Hate/Searchlight, which seems to be to strengthen state power against anti-state groups of the right and left (just witness their lobbying which resulted in a ban on ALL marches in 5 London boroughs for a month), they've done some good research here and it's worth checking out. We need to root out these Rambo wannabes and show them in no uncertain terms that their fascist ideology will be defeated.

From the allegedly liberal left to Murdoch’s hard right, the media spectrum continues to shine green for 'go' on the Libyan war. An Independent on Sunday (IoS) editorial on August 28 observes:

‘This newspaper supported Nato's military intervention, and Britain's part in it, when it began in March, but it was a choice between hard and complex options – and so it remains.’

Police forces, prisons and youth detention centres face prosecution for corporate homicide from this week if an individual dies in their custody.

In the 10 years between 1999 and 2009, 333 people died in or following police custody, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Ministry of Justice figures show that last year there were 58 self-inflicted deaths among prisoners in England and Wales.

Resistas, Hectic Egg & El Dia at Sumac

31-08-2011 20:55

Notts ABC put on another great fundraiser last night. A night of radical feminist DIY music, spoken word and zines featured the ReSistas from Vienna as well as locals Hectic Egg and El Dia. There was a great turnout and atmosphere and some really amazing performances and all proceeds will go towards prisoner support.

First up was El Dia who blew us away with a set of passionate and conscious anti-imperialist, feminist poetry and hip hop. El Dia is one half of the Sisters of Resistance, an 'international group of revolutionary young women'. Check them out! Next up were the hilarious duo Hectic Egg whose punk songs about robbing bras from British Home Stores and giving the vicar's wife cunnilingus had the crowd roaring along with each chorus. Last but not least, the ReSistas bitter sweet acoustic songs about love and loss brought another more contemplative mood again.

Big up to the performers and the organisers for putting on a great night!

This week we look at the effect on the direction of Western society of the concerted efforts made to turn as many people as possible into non-thinking automata. In our first hour, a wide ranging and entertaining lecture from a quarter century ago, E. F. Schumacher speaks on "The World Crisis and the Wholeness of Life" in the year before his death. Then the ensuing Q & A, followed by chapter 5 from Illich's Deschooling Society. We conclude with a little from John Taylor Gatto and a retired Brigadier General on one aspect of waste by the US military.
