Nottingham Fixers - become a Fixer

Nottingham Fixers is a Nottingham-based community group who run a Fix-it space at Sneinton Market on the 3rd Saturday of every month.
The group are currently looking for new fixers to get involved.
The Nottingham Fixers repair space aims to help people fix items, by not only fixing them, but by teaching them how to fix, so in future they can fix items instead of buying new.
The reason? Because we have a major problem with consumption, and we are in a society where people are very happy to buy new things, instead of fixing them, simply because it is easier & cheaper.
Nottingham Fixers is a community group who want to change the way we consume things, so that instead of throwing things away we fix them, and just as importantly we teach people how to fix things themselves.
We need people with all sorts of skills, because we never know what people will bring to have fixed. It could be:
- mechanical
- electrical/electronic
- digital
- textiles
You don't need to be an expert in these skills - we will have fixers on the day who can shadow you. You will need to bring your own tools, and conduct a risk assessment on what could go wrong.
It's great fun, and is great satisfaction for helping to fix someone's broken item for them.

Since the first of Juli we (an action group from the Dutch Earth First!) have occupied a forest in Wilrijk. So far there’s been no great risk of eviction but this is about to change. Incidents began at 2100 and peaked (reportedly) at 2200 when so called illegal immigrants set fire to their container cells. Reports of mattresses burned and at least one housing unit destroyed. Lots of tear gas, and flash bangs grenades reported with heavy police and fire unit present. Council Tax protestor Ross Longhurst with supporters at Nottingham Magistrates were a liability order was served against him.
Council Tax protestor Ross Longhurst appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on 8th. August. He was charged with failing to make Council Tax payments to Nottingham City Council and a liability order was served against him. Ross told the magistrates that he was refusing to pay up because the Council want more money for less services and they have been slashing services which hit vulnerable people such as the disabled, sick, old and children.
There were supporters with placards outside the Court and Ross told them that it was rich bankers who brought about the financial crisis but the Government which is forcing the rest of us to pay their debts. Thousands of people in Nottingham and elsewhere are not paying Council Tax because they simply cannot afford it. Many families have been reduced to needing handouts from food banks. Labour-controlled Nottingham City Council, like all other local councils across the country, have done nothing to resist the Coalition Government's austerity programme which hits the poorest people hardest.
People who can afford to pay Council Tax should withhold it in solidarity with those who cannot afford it. Already non-payment is spreading throughout the country and if enough of us take action then it will create a financial crisis for local government as happened with the anti-poll tax campaign. This could force a change of policy by the Coalition Government.

Nottingham Green Festival + Vegan Festival

The Nottingham Green Festival is confirmed for Sunday 1st September.
The event, now in its 22nd year, is independently organised by grass routes community based volunteers, with no statutory funding. The ethical standards and environmental / human / animal rights ethos of the event are long established, having evolved from the pre-history of the Nottm Peace Festival from which it has grown.
If you are able to run a fund-raiser, book a stall for your group or encourage others to do so, that might make all the difference in ensuring the success of Nottingham's own Green Festival, the place for the whole family to learn, explore and try the latest in everything environmentally friendly and ethical, whilst also having lots of fun in the beautiful setting of the Arboretum Park, Waverley Street / Addison Street, a couple of minutes from Nottingham's Old Market Square.
This event has over 100 product, information and food stalls, kids rides, workshops, alternative therapies and technologies, live performers, entertainments throughout the park, live music bands performing from the bandstand alongside Veggies Catering Campaign and the Vegan Festival within the Green Festival

Nottingham Vegan Festival at Nottingham Green Festival
Vegan-friendly stall holders, businesses & groups invited to the Nottingham Vegan Festival at Nottingham Green Festival Sunday 1st September 2013 12noon to 6pm at Nottingham Arboretum
For 6 years, from 2005 - 2009, Veggies and other vegan campaigners helped organise the East Midlands' Vegan Festival which welcomed over 2000 members of the public each year to the Council House on Nottingham's Old Market Square.
Returning in 2013, the Vegan Festival team are very grateful to the Nottingham Green Festival for providing space to hold a Vegan Festival within the Green Festival.
We invite you to book your stall in the usual way then, contact Veggies to join the 'vegan village' space, together with Veggies Catering Campaign, in and around our marquee near the Bandstand.
