The End of Traditional Antisystemic Movements and the Need for A New Type of AM

18-09-2011 23:04

The meaning of 'antisystemic movements', the cange in the systemic parameters in the era of neoliberal modernity, class structure changes and their political implications, ideological crisis and the rise of postmodernism and irrationalism, 'old' antisystemic movements (the collapse of socialist statism and the bankruptcy of anarchism as an antisystemic movement), 'new' antisystemic movements (the end of Greens as an antisystemic movement, the death of feminism as an antisystemic movement), the anti-globalisation movement and the need for a new type of antisystemic movement.

World Week for the Abolition of Meat: 23-30 Sept 2011

18-09-2011 17:54

Meat Abolition
The next WWAM will take place, as planned, between 23 September and 30 September 2011.

The aim is to promote again and again the idea that the production and consumption of animal flesh must be abolished.

The idea is to claim loud and clear that it is not only the duty of each individual to stop supporting the murderous exploitation required by the consumption of animal flesh and "by-products", but that it is also, therefore, the duty of societies as a whole to declare themselves
for the banning of farming, fishing and hunting.

Land & Freedom Report

18-09-2011 14:55

Latest from Land & Freedom Camp

Hello,

We are on day 2 of Land & Freedom Camp having enjoyed a peaceful night on the Common with no serious disturbances or oppression from anyone.

The atmosphere here is good.  We have setup an info point with fliers, books and information on many subjects relating to the land.  The locals seem to be enjoying our presence.  Tonight there is going to be a bike powered cinema screening of Winstanley, a dramatic film chartering the 17th century group of radicals and Gerrard Winstanley, an outspoken member of the movement.

This week we are setting up various workshops including a daily craft event, two yoga sessions daily (9-10 am & 6-7 pm).  Tomorrow (Monday) there will be a subterranean expedition.  If coming along, just come to the camp at 1 a.m.  Also on Wednesday night will be having a poetry and open mic session from 7.30 p.m.  come on down an express yourself (or enjoy the expression of others).

Finding us...

We are situated next to Holy Trinity Church on Clapham Common, about 5 minutes walk from Clapham Common station in the Old Town.  We're just opposite Clapham Library and Starbucks.  If you have any trouble finding us, call: 07963 465 195.  Also you can visit: www.landandfreedom.squat.net for more info.

If you want to join us for a spot of camping, please bring warm clothing, sleeping bag, a tent, a mug, bowl and spoon.  We're asking that people respect our request to keep our site free of drugs and alcohol.

Peace, love, land & freedom.

EDF Breaks Planning Conditions at Hinkley Point

EDF has broken a time limit condition attached to its planning permission to remove a spoil heap from the Hinkley Point site, the Stop Hinkley campaign has discovered.

EDF has broken a time limit condition attached to its planning permission to remove a spoil heap from the Hinkley Point site, the Stop Hinkley campaign has discovered. The work - removing spoil contaminated with asbestos left over from the construction of the original Hinkley A power station – should have been completed by 31 August. This was a condition of the planning consent granted to EDF by Somerset County Council last January. However, work is still continuing and the company is now applying for an extension to continue with the clean-up operation up to February 2012. Although EDF is in breach of the conditions attached to its planning permission, County Council planners have decided not to take any action. The Council is concerned, however, that if the work continues into the winter months it could disturb migratory birds which fly along the coast past Hinkley Point. ...

Commonwealth Heads Meeting in Sri Lanka plan denounced

18-09-2011 12:14

Talk of awarding the next Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting to Sri Lanka, led by the despotic Rajapaksa governement accused of systematic war crimes against scores of civilians at the end of the country's 26-year old civil war in 2009, has been widely denounced.

Meanwhile, why so little BBC coverage on Sri Lanka since the end of the conflict bearing in mind the grotesque barbarity that has occurred in the country, as Channel 4 have so successfully exposed?

World Week for the Abolition of Meat: 23-30 Sept 2

18-09-2011 10:55

The idea is to claim loud and clear that it is not only the duty of each individual to stop supporting the murderous exploitation required by the consumption of animal flesh and "by-products", but that it is also, therefore, the duty of societies as a whole to declare themselves for the banning of farming, fishing and hunting.

Call for the upcoming WWAM:
23 Sept-30 Sept 2011

As you know, the past World Week for the Abolition of Meat was a success throughout the world.

The next WWAM will take place, as planned, between 23 September and 30 September 2011.

The aim is to promote again and again the idea that the production and consumption of animal flesh must be abolished.

Advocating the abolition of meat is the logical extension of vegetarianism or veganism. People who are against bull-fighting do not only ask the public to boycott bull-fighting events, they ask for bull-fighting to be banned. The opponents of "foie gras" do not only advise people against buying it, they want force feeding to be banned. Why would the opponents of meat be the only ones to restrict themselves to giving individual advice?
The refusal to eat meat can be seen as a political boycott and as the expression of one's support for the demand for abolition similar to the campaign for the abolition of slavery in Britain at the end the 18th century where 300,000 people boycotted the sugar produced from slave plantations.

The movement for the abolition of meat is a political act: its aim is to get the public to adhere to the idea that meat should be banned. Its objective is that human societies, one after another, decide to ban the production, sale, and consumption of meat.
The idea is to claim loud and clear that it is not only the duty of each individual to stop supporting the murderous exploitation required by the consumption of animal flesh and "by-products", but that it is also, therefore, the duty of societies as a whole to declare themselves
for the banning of farming, fishing and hunting.

Why does Cuadrilla own an old gas well near Elswick in Lancashire?

17-09-2011 23:07

Simulated Fracking in British Isles
The Elswick-1 gas well was completed and stimulated by Independent Energy in 1993. The gas field, which was commissioned in 1996, produces gas from a low permeability sandstone reservoir at a depth of around 4000 ft and is used to generate power which is fed into the electricity grid. It has generated around 1 MW of power from a reciprocating gas engine since 1996.

Update on Land & Freedom Camp + location details

17-09-2011 19:56

The camp started today with over 40 people joining in. The day started with a circle where people introduced themselves and their campaigns and started a discussion about land, ownership and freedom. (Reports and pics to follow) Rain brought the discussion to an end and a shelter was constructed where people chatted, sang, shared food and shared ideas for the week ahead. It was agreed that the camp would move to outside the church on the corner of Clapham Common Northside and The Pavement.

This is an update on the Land & Freedom Camp: a 7 day open exhibition and demonstration taking place on Clapham Common from Sat 17th Sept til Sun 25th Sept. The aim of the camp is to highlight the issue of the economics of land ownership and the politics and laws regarding the use of the land locally and globally. We want to communicate the myriad of effects that the current system has including:

  •  the almost complete restriction of access to land to live (and grow) autonomously and sustainably by common people in the UK and around the world due to laws governing use of the land and/or economic domination of it by the few (despite there being over 5 acres of land for every human being on earth)

  • the ensuing effect of artificial scarcity of available land that the restriction of access creates: driving up the cost of housing and reducing it's availability in both cities and the rural areas. This creates a slave culture where people struggle to make end's meet in crammed urban environments or as for the most of the world's population even to put food in their mouths.

  • the modern legacy of political structures that serve the interests of the land owning establishment which have been previously constructed through history by the same priveleged group.

  • the laws and land grabs which these structures continue to push forward dispossessing people locally and globally: whether it be the UK Gov's agenda to ban squatting, evicting people from their land (Dale Farm) or as in Africa with the forced dispossession of people from the land they depend on for their survival.

  • the completely undemocratic, unsustainable and dangerous control of the natural resources by private corporations for profit, monopolising production of humanities bare necessities: food, fuel, water and so on. The result: food scarcity, destruction of eco-systems, climate change, peak oil etc...

Event: Land & Freedom Camp.
Location: Bandstand, Clapham Common.
Map link: http://bit.ly/nqXhOS
Transport: Clapham Common tube. Buses from Clapham Junction.
Contact: 07963 475 195 for any questions.

On Sunday there will be a stall with info and a meeting to plan action and the strategy for the camp for the week.

New Workers Co-op and Cafe

17-09-2011 10:25

The Common Place is dead, long live Wharf Chambers.  Out of the ashes of the Common Place a new workers collective has been set up and on Friday there was a fundraiser for the vegan/vegitarian cafe that will run out of the building.  With regular opening still a few weeks away Friday was a chance to see some of the hard work that has been put into the space.

The Common Place tried to be many things and some worked better than others but the building did work well as a gig veneu for the diy music scence in Leeds and beyond.  Wharf Chambers is trying a different model so instead of vounteers working till 3am with a free drink in return the workers co-op hopes that paying the workers will allow them to put more time into promotion and organising the space.  The focus of the space is much smaller as one complaint leveled at the Common Place was that it tried to be all things but satisfied few people.  On friday the achivements of the new workers co-op have made since May were on show. Where there were walls there are now windows, gone was the rubbish and junk replaced with a new toilet block.  The space felt cleaner and lighter and different.

The fundraiser was a great sucess with nearly £300 raised for the cafe.  The collective hopes the space will be open mid-October with the cafe open from morning till the bar opens, exact times still undecided.  There are many things for the co-op to still sort but it seems Leeds has the energy to support a project like Wharf Chambers.

NCAFC activists drop banner for day 1 of Lib Dem conference

17-09-2011 09:16

Activists from the National Campaign against Fees and Cuts [1] did a banner drop yesterday, on the bridge connecting the Hyatt hotel, where delegates are staying, to the ICC conference centre, over Broad street, during rush hour.

The banner, which read “Traitors Not Welcome, Hate Clegg, Love NCAFC“, reminds delegates of the pledge taken by every Liberal Democrat candidate before the last election to vote against a rise in tuition fees and press for a fairer alternative.
