Notts bedroom tax protest

22-03-2013 16:55

The first bedroom tax protest in Nottingham.

Last Saturday (The 16th) saw Nottinghams first Bedroom Tax Protest in concordance with the National Campaign which had 55 cities across the UK out at the same time.  The miserable weather didn't seem to dampen the atmosphere or indeed turnout with around 300 people at its height and not really dipping below 250 throughout. A good number were from assorted parties and campaigns like the Greens or the Nottingham Pensioners Action Group (NPAG) but the majority were no more political than most people but are going to be hit hard by the proposed bedroom tax with around 5 and a half thousand liable to be hit in Nottingham (according to the Evening Post). We were graced by the 'human' face of the City Council: Graham Chapman.  Skulking round the edges of the protest he was confronted on several occasions by members of the public interested in their councils position. He informed us that (I'm paraphrasing here) 'the council was seeking to minimalise the numbers of people who could be at risk of eviction by helping measure and when possible reassigning a room from that of a bedroom to a boxroom'. When he pressed on whether the council would make a commitment to not evict those unable to pay as Brighton Council has pledged. Chapman said it was unlikely and that he hoped it wouldn't have to go so far. The possibility of a judicial review was also mentioned but given our councils record on standing up to central government when it counts I have little hope on that score.

Therewere some enthusiastic speakers from the TUC and the Nottinghamshire Anti-Bedroom Taax Campaign, amongst others, who were met with riotous applause and cheers whilst distributing useful information. A public meeting was hosted by the TUC the following Tuesday with attendance at around 50-60. Nothing of substance was decided unfortunately but hopefully the follow-up meeting this Wednesday (The 27th) will yield some actual action.

21-03-2013 18:15

BAYER is staging costly celebrations to mark its 150th birthday, yet the company´s numerous crimes are not mentioned at all in the commemorative publications. Instead of acknowledging responsibility for forced labor, poison gas and fatal pharmaceutical products, the company's history is wholly ignored.
The Coalition against Bayer Dangers has introduced countermotions to the upcoming Bayer shareholder meeting to highlight the dark side of BAYER’s past

Is Welsh Planning Policy for Coal about to Hit the Buffers?

21-03-2013 12:18

The new Welsh Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Mr Carl Seargent, is about to make a decision on the Varteg Hill Opencast site application. If he decides to uphold the Appeal recommendation arising from a recent Public Inquiry it could set a new precedent for how all other Welsh opencast site applications are decided. It could have even wider repercussions across England and Scotland as well. This press release explains why.

EDL threaten Muslim conference in Nottingham

21-03-2013 08:55

Nottingham EDL are trying to shut down a Family Retreat conference at the University of Nottingham for the sole reason that it is being held by Muslims. Calling the organisers "Jihadis" and the event a "hate speech conference" they are encouraging supporters to contact the East Midlands Conference Centre to get the event cancelled and are threatening to hold a demonstration if it goes ahead. In fact, the family event is a very apolitical one, focused mainly on doctrinal issues within Islam. But then the speakers do have beards...

It seems that the EDL only have issues with the event because it is organised by and for Muslims. Of course, if a Muslim group were to protest and try to shut down a Christian event, the EDL would be baying for blood. Apparently, it's alright when it's the other way round though. It seems they are only in favour of their own freedom of speech but want to silence others.

The conference is scheduled to take place from Fri 29 March - Mon 01 April at the East Midlands Conference Centre on Nottingham University's main campus.
