Morton Hall Demo
04-06-2011 00:55
This morning at Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre in Swinderby, Lincolnshire a demonstration was held in disgust at the opening of yet another detention centre.
Our intention was to create enough noise from the inside to be heard on the inside by those imprisoned by the State. This was thought to be particularly important today, as Damien Green the minister for immigration was being shown around the prison in it's new guise as an I.R.C, he was accompanied by the usual snivelling, narcissistic and self deluded members of the press who were also treated to a grand tour.
The press members, no doubt viewing the inmates as they would animals in a zoo, were no doubt shown how modern, enlightened and friendly the prison was. The quantity and quality of relaxation, stimulation and general homeliness was undoubtedly underlined as the hacks jumped like rats for scraps.
Outside, banners and signs were raised and held expressing our unwavering solidarity with the prisoners inside (indeed with all those who have been kidnapped by state power), the damage caused by the detention and deportations industry and highlighting the UK government's insidious role in that industry.
Various absurd and circular conversations were had with both security, prison officials and police. Some conversations attempting to persuading us that it was all very nice behind the cages, that people had TV's and phones as if these things are the barometers of human freedom. Other conversations were based around deluded threats of removing or arresting us, deluded to think that we would move because they threaten. Many of us there today know full well that the police, prison, and border systems are arbitrarily enforced and will always be served in the name of the state and capitalism against all others. This enforcement is most often against the most marginalised groups who in order to survive the effects of capitalism are forced to go beyond it's legal system. In the case of Morton Hall this is presently Non UK nationals who have been arrested and will be deported because they are not perceived to play a role in the maintenance of capitalism in this country. Knowing this means that expressions of solidarity to all those imprisoned in Morton Hall, as well as all UK prisons and "immigration removal centres" such as this demonstration must continue.
Which means we will be back, not to engage in "debate" with prison authorities or the police, but to let those inside know that they have not been forgotten.
If you want to participate in future demonstrations, or have ideas of other ways in which to show solidarity to those inside Morton Hall please email NSN[at]riseup[dot]net.
There's also a vistors group currently being set up, who are planning on arranging visits to those imprisoned. Who we can put you in touch with unless they add their contacts in the comment section.

Facebook doesn't like naked cyclists and has hidden the World Naked Bike Ride due to happen in York on the 4th of June. Facebook have a habit of removing political content and the Naked (or clothes-optional) bike ride is no exception.
On Saturday 4th June 2011, the SIXTH World Naked Bike Ride will take place in YORK. Start time is 5pm, gathering from 4 onwards just south of Millennium Bridge. They have had the event page deleted on Facebook.
It is sad when nudity is unacceptable in society yet newspapers can have page 3 girls, magazines can talk about dieting and fat celebrities with disgust and music videos have become soft-core erotica. Our society has issue with the human body and seeing 'normal' people with no clothes has become unacceptable. Body image being solely connected with erotica and advertising is a expected and has been used since the 1920.

Review of 'Twelve' by Sanford Theatre Collective
03-06-2011 13:55
Review of the performance of "Twelve", as adapted from "Twelve Angry Men" by Reginald Rose, and performed by Sanford Collective, which was announced here:
https://london.indymedia.org/events/9126
Hearing that 51% of the British population seems to be in favour of reintroducing the death penalty, and in the current environment of political unrest, the theatre group Sanford Collective decides it is time for a classic court room drama. Based in Sanford Housing Cooperative, in Sanford Walk, New Cross, this is a self-funded, all-volunteers theatre group where the director and the producer are also part of the cast.
The original play is based in 1950s United States of America. This current adaptation is placed in The Royal Court of Justice, London, in the near future. The death penalty has been re-introduced, via the traditional British method of hanging on the gallows.
Twelve court jurors of diverse backgrounds have been called to try the case of a 16 year old boy, accused of murdering his father.
A self-conscious, small petty man as the foreman; a quiet, meek woman as juror number 2; a forceful, intolerant bully and estranged father as juror number 3; a practised speaker and arch rationalist as juror number 4; an estate-raised nurse as juror number 5; a "not used to doing the supposing" house-painter as juror number 6; an anti-foreigner hooligan with a thick Spanish accent as juror number 7; a natural leader as juror number 8; a frail old woman as juror number 9; a racist, angry and bitter woman as juror number 10; a watch-maker with an even thicker Spanish accent as juror number 11; and an advertising agent as juror number 12. All must weigh up the evidence and witness statements to ultimately decide, not upon the guilt or innocence of the young man on trial, but upon their own abilities to condemn.
Although it looks like a clear cut case and there is only one ("great, there is always one") juror who disagrees with the rest, deliberations slowly cast doubt over the case, much to the dismay of the hooligan, in a hurry for a football game, the racist bigot who fears how "they are multiplying" and the father of a big lad who "hit me in the face".
The atmosphere in the jury room is oppressively hot ("Wonderful, the fan doesn't work"; "Excuse me, don't you sweat?"). Although the première was going to be in the open air, and the rain preventing this might have been seen as a set-back, actually the alternative stage, the newly installed cabin, provided the perfect claustrophobic enclosure that Rose wanted to convey originally, as surely the stage in the Fox & Firkin will provide for the last two final performances.
The play has various hilarious moments ("He don't even speak good English!") and more numerous tense situations ("Now sit down and don't open your filthy mouth again"), building up to the brilliantly delivered, climatic final monologue.
Next performances will be:
Fri 3rd June 7.30pm Fox & Firkin 316 Lewisham High Street, London, SE13 6JZ
Fri 10th June 7.30pm Fox & Firkin 316 Lewisham High Street, London, SE13 6JZ
