Resistance in Swansea University

Students and staff at Swansea University are resisting a proposal by the Vice Chancellor to close down 5 departments at the university, introduce variable top-up fees and cut local bursaries and grants. Amongst other direct action, a protest has been called for the 10th of march when the university senate meeting will take place where the decisions will be made. If these proposals go ahead, this will represent the corporate takeover of our higher education system, further polarising the gap between rich and poor students, creating a two tier education system, part of the broader neo-liberal agenda.

Sheffield students occupy Town Hall against Top-Up fees

Sheffield Town Hall occupation
Yesterday 200 students occupied the Town Hall for one hour against top-up fees as part of a 300 strong demonstration involving students from Sheffield Uni and Hallam. Everyone agreed it had been a highly successful action.

Young people protest in trenches against the arms trade.

600 hundred young Christians will kneel in a 50ft-long makeshift ‘trench’ outside the Defence Export Services Organisation (DESO) in central London today. Christian prayer and campaign network SPEAK is calling for an end to the public funding of DESO - the controversial government department which markets UK arms exports on behalf of companies - and for the millions of pounds currently being spent on this promotion of weapons to be put to better use.
