EDL Outnumbered By Trees In Solihull - #edl @AntiFascistNetw

13-01-2013 02:54

For the first time ever (with many more to come), the fascist numpties of the EDL were vastly outnumbered in by trees. Saving their bus and train fares, antifascist campaigners in the Midlands left the anti-Nazi campaigning in Solihull town centre to us, the natural environment. Not afraid of bad weather (like the fairweather racists), we well and truly outnumbered an inconsequential fascist rabble repetitively chanting monotonous, moronic racist crap.

Judge rules on Bradley Manning Torture Hearing - declines to dismiss charges

12-01-2013 16:41

Judge Denise Lind. Illustration by Clark Stoeckley

Bradley Manning was back at Fort Meade, Maryland, US for another pretrial hearing this week and military Judge Denise Lind issued her ruling on the unlawful pretrial punishment motion. This part of the case was dealt with at a long hearing in November and December, during which Bradley Manning gave evidence in person. He spoke about the punitive conditions he was held under at Quantico marine brig in Virginia from July 2010 until April 2011. Many other witnesses testified, including numerous brig staff. The defence motion called for all charges to be dismissed or, failing that, for 10:1 sentencing credit for the time Brad was mistreated.

For more information, see this Indymedia feature on the torture hearing

Brad's court martial continues on 16 and 17 January with another hearing, this time a continuation of the defence motion calling for charges to be dismissed on the grounds of lack of speedy trial. By the time the case reaches trial, put back again to at least 3 June, Bradley Manning will have been held for over three years.

Join the solidarity vigil in London on Wednesday 16 January at 2pm at the US Embassy.

Wave energy firm Pelamis pledge to keep manufacturing in Leith

12-01-2013 14:55

Sometimes, when Leithers talk about the docks, they get all misty eyed and nostalgic for a not-so-far off halcyon time when everyone worked in real jobs on the docks, loading and trading and making and building stuff and travelling all over the world...

UG#606 - Flight From Meaning 1 (The Superior Human, Debt in The Axial Age)

12-01-2013 12:21

Audio
The first of a two part series, we consider the bigger question of meaning in life. In our first hour we look at a prejudice shared by many people of differing backgrounds and inclinations - the notion that human beings are somehow innately superior to all other life forms - with a radio adaption of the 2012 film The Superior Human. We conclude our second hour by resuming reading from David Graeber's Debt, The First 5000 Years where we left off in episode 597.

UG#607 - Flight From Meaning 2 (Money = Competition = Psychosis)

12-01-2013 12:17

Audio
Although in the 'Flight From Meaning' series, a rather traditional show concludes my second year of making Unwelcome Guests. First, a regular speaker, Alfie Kohn, speaking on why he believes that any competition is too much. We conclude with the end of chapter 9 of David Graeber's Debt, The First 5000 Years, on the introduction of coinage in India, Greece and China.

UG#608 - Flight From Meaning 3 (Science, Chimpanzees and The Monongahela)

12-01-2013 12:12

Audio
I start my third year with an unusually open ended love-it-or-hate-it next episode in the 'Flight From Meaning' series, centered on an essay by philosopher Steve Talbott on how biologists contrive to study life itself as if it were merely a lifeless mechanism. We also hear from Jane Goodall about chimpanzee society and read some of Underground History of American Education on John Taylor Gatto's boyhood.

RSPCA staff ignored many calls in August/Sept 2012 to stop attacks on animals

12-01-2013 12:08

The news that David Cameron's pals have reported the RSPCA to the charity commission can be out in context by pointing out that far from being all keen to protect animals RSPCA staff can ben routinely negligent. As has been found out in East London recently

Three contrasting pieces for you which all hint at the inadequacy of limiting self as the skin-encapsulated ego. Firstly, Ethan Watters on socially defined aspects of madness, including how Glaxo Smith Kline aggressively globalized Western ideas of depression in Japan. Next, I summarize Steve Talbott's essay on problems of the 'man as machine' metaphor. Finally, an hour on Peace Pilgrim, whose 'retirement project' was to walk across USA for over 25 years without using money or asking for food or shelter.

Archive Material on Paris Assassinations

12-01-2013 11:53

This document covers the recent history of the cold war legacy death squads that have been named by the Kurdish comrades, and takes an attempt to identify the originating agency from the known facts about death squad capabilities in Europe. At this stage it seems remarkable that the Turkish state is speculating about minority infighting as the cause of the deaths in a very similar way as it has happened regarding the series of murders of Turkish immigrants into Europe which then turned out to be a death squad operation. These obviously political assassinations are not only an attack against the Kurdish people and their hopeful but against all struggles of emancipation and the past targets of these death squads whose memory is being defiled by fresh bloodshed of the same inferior motives.

G4S vans attacked

11-01-2013 16:55

In the very early hours of Wednesday morning we carried out a couple of swift acts of love and self-defence. Two G4S vehicles had their tires slashed, paint stripped and windows smashed. We did this as signal of solidarity to our friends in Nottingham HMP and as special message to our friend in Rome Elisa Di Bernardo whose courage and devotion is inspiration to us.

G4S are a global corporation which profits from the torture and caging of the working class throughout the world. They imprison and torture in order to maintain the capitalist order of things, and in our view should be attacked at every opportunity. The men and women murdered by G4S and the industrial prison complex it is inseparable from increases every day. The numbers whose lives are ripped apart by G4S every hour. Our hatred for G4S and our love for our brothers and sisters increases every second.  Our gesture on Tuesday night was small, but it was repeatable, and we will repeat it and others like it.

Fuck the prisons.

For freedom, for friendship.
