Young disabled Pakistani man tasered & assaulted by police on New Year's Eve

Shocket Aslam was stopped by the police after leaving a petrol station on the M6 without paying for £20 worth of petrol. During this, despite being disabled and being in a wheelchair he was attacked by a number of officers with batons/koshes and tasered and was subsequently denied medical treatment when he was held at a police station to Stafford. He had gone to Manchester from High Wycombe with a friend to pick up a car.

This Saturday (7 January) the weekend before the tenth anniversary of the opening of the illegal US military prison camp at Guantánamo Bay, on 11 January 2002, a public rally is to be held at Trafalgar Square (North Terrace, outside the National Gallery), organised by the London Guantánamo Campaign (LGC), Save Shaker Aamer Campaign (SSAC), Stop the War Coalition (StWC) and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) [1].

Sex-workers: brothel laws put women at risk

A woman found not guilty of brothel keeping calls for a change to UK laws that demand prostitutes work alone putting them at risk from attack.

Sheila Farmer was arrested 17 months ago after a flat she was managing was raided by police, but the case collapsed when the prosecutions key witness, who worked at the flat, disappeared.

Venezuelan prison occupation

1000 friends and family members of inmates are currently occupying a prison in Venezuela. This in protest against the judicial system, and prison conditions and brutality. The Venezuelan government believes the occupation to be part of a CIA backed plot to destabilise the country.

Around one thousand friends and family members of inmates held within Venezuelan prisons, have today entered the Yare prison near Caracas, and have refused to leave. They are made up of around 800 women, 150 children, and a handful of men.
