National demo for the Halesowen 4

29-01-2013 15:02

Video
On Saturday 26th January over 200 people marched through the streets of Halesowen in solidarity with and to demand the reinstatement of four maths lectures who were fired by Halesowen College purely for their students results. However the real reason for the sackings might have more to do with the fact that all four lectures were active union members trying to improve the poor conditions they had to work in at the maths department.

Justice for the Halesowen 4

07-01-2013 14:35

A protest was held this morning at 8:00 outside every entrance to Halesowen College demanding justice for the Halesowen 4. David Muritu, Branch Secretary for Halesowen UCU, was dismissed from his job as Maths lecturer at Halesowen College on December 20th. The College failed to follow their own disciplinary procedure or ACAS guidelines (no evidence was presented 3 days in advance of the hearing), without anything other than deductive reasoning (his sacking was linked to results, with no regard for competency procedure or accurate review of statistical significance (his results are above national average). David has been rated as a grade 2 (good) lecturer by the College's own observation system. Three more Maths Lecturers, all of them active UCU members, face disciplinary procedures and the imminent possibility of dismissal.

Communities won't take the closure of nurseries and childrens centres.

25-12-2012 19:00

Around 100 parents and children under 5 arrived from Tinsley Green children's centre. Another 50 joined the protest from Darnall Community Nursery.

In total at least 250 protested outside Sheffield Town Hall against the Labour council's planned slashing of Sure Start children's centres and nurseries.

The council is aiming to cut £3.5m from these centres. Currently there are 36 centres, all Ofsted registered and providing childcare, health, education and family support. All would be downgraded.

Instead the aim is to have 17 children's centre 'areas', with each area having only one nursery. The council calls its proposals a 'redesign' and incredibly has claimed that the service will improve, reaching more children.

Yet, at the same time, it blames the government for forcing the cuts on it - thereby implying that the service will suffer.

19 of the 36 centres have been earmarked for closure. Five of the seven centres that received an 'outstanding' grade from Ofsted last year are amongst those under threat.

Many nursery workers and parents have been told that their centres will be closed by March 2013 at the latest.

Yet the council is saying that there will be no closures. What it means is that it will use all the sites for something - it's just that 19 of them won't have childcare services!

Victimisation of students forces UCL occupation to withdraw

01-12-2012 12:42

A student occupation at University College London (UCL) has been forced to disband after university management gave notice that they would hold three students liable for £40,000 worth of costs.

The occupation was established in protest at UCL’s plan to open a new campus in Stratford, east London. The development of the campus would require the demolition of the Carpenters’ Estate, and the eviction of hundreds of council tenants from their homes. Robin Wales, the Labour executive mayor of Newham, has defended the plans. Among his many justifications, he has said: “you find people who say it’s their chance to move to Southend.”
