London hosts Dalai Lama- China handshake

Smiling Avaaz members pass the Dalai Lama's handshake toward the Chinese Embassy
Yesterday London hosted an incredible event in the form of a 'human chain handshake' from the hand of the Dalai Lama himself, via 2,000 people in a human chain, all the way to the Chinese embassy in Mayfair.
It was an attempt to create some sort of dialogue between the two parties, and went off smoothly.

Troubleshooting accountants who were brought in to save a West Midlands-based charity which houses asylum seekers are in dispute with the Home Office over whether or not they are to close down the scheme. Trade union, Unison says the row threatens the jobs of the 135 staff who run Astonbrook Housing Association.

MI5, Mosley, the sting of the whip & Holy Terrors - a tale of Human Interest

By now much of the middle browed formula 1 or espionage orientated English readership will have learnt of the latest twist in the Max Mosley sex scandal. "The Sunday Times" has revealed that one of the five sex workers contracted to put the former FIA chief through a five hour session of Nazi fetish BDSM "hankypanky" was in fact the wife of a MI5 agent at the time. We are assured that said MI5 agent has now retired but need only speculate as to whether or not his wife must now carry the onus of mortgage repayments. Yet, this all reminds me (very much) of a 1939 book by HG Wells. Which I'm going to tell you about. Because this tale of "human interest" provides an opportunity to brush up on our cultural history.

Those who experienced the original pre Criminal Justice Act Interactive Diners Clubs in the early nineties, the RTS meetings of the mid 90's, or the late 90's London Underground meetings etc. will know what kind of thing to expect. The idea is to inspire and re-energise each other, form new links, strengthen old alliances, share skills and resources, raise awareness and get people involved.

A new feature documentary RFK Must Die: The Assassination of Bobby Kennedy will be released next Friday, May 16th at the ICA and Rich Mix cinemas in London. Shane O'Sullivan follows up earlier reports for Newsnight and the Guardian and explores what really happened the night Bobby Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5th, 1968. Convicted assassin Sirhan Sirhan has never been able to remember the shooting. Now, new evidence suggests Sirhan did not shoot Robert Kennedy and the case should be urgently reopened.

Policing and Protest: Committee Call For Evidence

The Joint Committee on Human Rights has put out a call for evidence in relation to UK policing and protest. They specifically cite SOCPA and the prosecution of Maya Evans as an example of 'concerns' that have been 'borne out'. It's a chance to show them what we already know. The deadline for submissions is Monday 9 June 2008.
