There is a meeting on the 6th of Jan to breath new life into maintaining radical autonomous social centres in London. The aim will be to set up a London wide social centres collective which will open and help run squatted spaces as well as publish listings of events and activites taking place in these spaces. How independent was the BBC Persian Service in the period 1941-79 ?

02-01-2008 09:01

This paper attempts to look at whether and how far the British Government has tried to use the broadcasts as a tool for political propaganda and influence.

It will in turn ask whether the Persian Service has -- as part of the BBC’s editorial whole – managed to keep its independence intact in reporting events in a balanced and objective way.

open letter to Fabio Mussi, the new Italian communist of the banana party

30-12-2007 20:28

Fabio Mussi, Minister of University and Research and leader of the Sinistra Democratica party in Italy has proposed in the Decreto Milleproroghe a reform of Italian universities and research. This is an open letter to Ministro Mussi which questions the likely detrimental consequences of such a reform based on the neoliberal British HE system. In particular the letter challenges the harm to academic freedom and research suggested by a system that encourages competitiveness and looks after capital interests. Vergogna!

Lakota Sioux - The Bravest Americans

25-12-2007 16:28

In September of this year, the United Nations passed a non-binding Resolution on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Naturally, Canada, the United States and Australia refused to sign, but this resolution paved the way for a move that has been waiting in the wings, so to speak, since the 1970s.

On Wednesday of this week, Russell Means led a delegation of the Lakota Sioux people to the U.S. State Department and the embassies of Bolivia, Chile, South Africa and Venezuela, declaring their secession from the United States of America.

24-12-2007 17:29

We “Free World” capitalistic Westerners are a loathsome lot—or to put it more crudely, we suck. When one considers how degenerate we are from a collective standpoint, it is difficult to suppress intense feelings of disgust and contempt.

Holiday Season Hypocrisy

23-12-2007 19:47

Christmas is also the time when the national obsession to shop and consume reaches its zenith. It traditionally begins the day after Thanksgiving, runs through Christmas eve, and after the holiday continues into January with plenty of extra buying power from holiday gift cards, year-end bonuses and other resources gotten or borrowed. It's for everything people never knew they wanted until creative advertising wizardry made their lives incomplete without them.

Liberalism To Murdochracy

20-12-2007 22:31

The former Murdoch retainer Andrew Neil has described James Murdoch, the heir apparent, as a "social liberal". What strikes me is his casual use of "liberal" for the new ruler of an empire devoted to the promotion of war, conquest and human division.

Mars Attacks! The corporatisation of Birmingham's community space

14-12-2007 14:23

Mars Pension Trustees, owners of Fiveways Centre in Birmingham, are threatening to shut it down in the New Year regardless of no planning application having been submitted and no firm proposals for development in place. This will mean the closure of some independent businesses that add great diversity to the corporate landscape of Birmingham City Centre including Cafe One, Fairtrade music venue and meeting space for student and campaign groups inc. Amnesty, Green Party, Respect and Oxfam. No offer of relocation or settlement has been forthcoming as social enterprise is not considered acceptable in the corporatisation of this lively community space.
