East Enders set up Whitechapel Community library - campaign news

The Whitechapel Community Library has been set up by a group of independent voluntary organisations - not receiving any funding from any public source of any kind – to continue to facilitate public access to and use of the books and materials that used to be in the now-closed Tower Hamlets Council-controlled Whitechapel Library. The site is soon to be taken over by another body, not a library. The Tower Hamlets Council has been accused today of destroying the library resources in the area. A new community, alternative, library is being set up and will be opened to the community in the very near future

This is an extract of a short pamphlet written in January 2006 detailing some thoughts on our current situation. This situation has remained intact for at least a hundred years past. It is not news as such but clearly is still very much a cause of great concern and will not go away as long as we are ignorant and compliant. A friend and I wrote this as the beginnings of a potential movement of discontent in Manchester and the world. MOBILISATION - united forces of soundsystems and peoples...

We ask you to mobilize yourselves, your sound systems and your friends and head for Strasbourg to the European Alternatives Resistance (E.A.R) protest to make yourselves seen and heard peacefully. We will be assembling at 14.00 hours at Place de l'Universite in strasbourg city center and will be marching on the European Parliement and Council and the Court of Human Rights.

We ask you all to bring the carnival atmosphere with whistles, horns, drums and anything else you can make some fucking noize with !!! We do not want a violent protest and ask everyone to be on there best behavior, dont give them the excuse to turn this on us, the worlds press will be watching... [then party after...]
