Thousands protest WTO in Geneva - Property Damage and Tear Gas

28-11-2009 21:17 | COP15 Climate Summit 2009 | Climate Chaos | Globalisation | Social Struggles | World

1
Up to 4-5000 people today marched in Geneva protesting ahead of the WTO meeting in an International Demonstration (see  http://www.anti-omc2009.org/?lang=en) as part of a week of action and debate around the WTO Ministerial which runs from 30th November to 2nd December(see  http://www.anti-omc2009.org/spip.php?article14).

The mobilisation is seen very much in relation to the COP15 UN climate conference taking place in Copenhagen 7th - 18th December (see  http://www.anti-omc2009.org/spip.php?article8).

This afternoon clashes broke out as parts of the crowd attacked property smashing windows of banks and shops and setting a number of cars on fire. Police used tear gas, concussion greandes and water cannon. Further protests are scheduled with the WTO meeting starting on Monday 30th November, ten years exactly since the famous Seattle WTO protests.

New Cop15 Book: Carbon Trading: How it Works + Why it Fails (pdf)

24-11-2009 11:04 | COP15 Climate Summit 2009 | Climate Chaos | Energy Crisis | Globalisation | World

Carbon Trade Watch, Transnational Institute
 http://carbontradewatch.org/

Carbon trading lies at the centre of global climate policy and is projected to become one of the world’s largest commodities markets, yet it has a disastrous track record since its adoption as part of the Kyoto Protocol.

"Carbon Trading: how it works and why it fails" outlines the limitations of an approach to tackling climate change which redefines the problem to fit the assumptions of neoliberal economics. It demonstrates that the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), the world’s largest carbon market, has consistently failed to ´cap´ emissions, while the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) routinely favoursenvironmentally ineffective and socially unjust projects. This isillustrated with case studies of CDM projects in Brazil, Indonesia, India and Thailand.

Global warfare: US military operations in all major regions of the World

US military presence per country (2009) [map by David Vine]
Not only does one country account for the overwhelming plurality of world military expenditures, but that nation also has troops and bases on all six habitable continents (as well as a 54-year military mission in Antarctica, Operation Deep Freeze) and eleven aircraft carrier strike groups and six navy fleets that roam the world's oceans and seas at will. It is also expanding a global interceptor missile system on land, on sea, in the air and into space that will leave it invulnerable to retaliation.

Gordon Brown delivers the annual foreign policy speech at Lord Mayor's banquet
Capitalism needs an enemy, real or invented and the demise of communism deprived them of a handy hook onto which they could hang the planet.

All the ‘war on terror’ has done is terrorize everybody and drag us deeper and deeper into the quagmire of the ‘new world order’.

From the former Yugoslavia to Somalia the Anglo-Saxon Empire is busy turning the planet into a graveyard.

N30 Global Day of Climate Action / 10 yrs since Seattle!

19-11-2009 22:29 | COP15 Climate Summit 2009 | Climate Chaos | Globalisation | Social Struggles | World

N30 - November the 30th, or the Monday after next - is 10 years since a coalition of protest and campaign groups shut down the World Trade Organisation (WTO) meeting in Seattle. It was successful coalition building, direct action and brought anti-globalisation into the mainstream. The WTO has struggled to achieve any new bollocks since (though it has managed to use it's existing bollocks to bad effect). Here's a hastily put together flyer/poster re the n30 climate day of action.
