New colonialism: Pentagon carves Africa into military zones

07-05-2010 19:42 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | World

Last year the commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), General William Ward, said the Pentagon had military partnerships with 35 of the continent's 53 nations, "representing U.S. relationships that span the continent." That number has increased in the interim.

As the first overseas regional military command set up by Washington in this century, the first since the end of the Cold War, and the first in 25 years, the activation of AFRICOM emphasizes the geostrategic importance of Africa in U.S. international military, political and economic planning.

Economic Slash and Burn: Greece’s Deadly Austerity Measures

07-05-2010 17:39 | Analysis | Globalisation | Social Struggles | World

"As the bloody drama was unfolding outside the Greek Parliament, various hands signed the papers that cut pensions and initiated tax hikes on fuel, cigarettes and alcohol. Civil service entitlements have been cut and pensions in the public sector frozen. The cuts are meant to trim a ballooning debt and save about $US45 billion over three years. But they have propelled the worst riots in years. And that, given the famous Greek record on street protest, is saying something. Not since 1991, where five people died in riots directed against the education bill, has Greece seen this."

Iran and the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) conference

03-05-2010 20:43 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | World

President Ahmadinejad speaking at the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference
This year's Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference - as with previous years' - promises to be yet another battle between the developing and the nuclear-armed nations. The US insists that the Non-Proliferation Treaty needs to be rewritten so as to place greater limits on what it calls "nuclear weapons proliferation" whilst the developing nations say that the concern over proliferation is being used as a pretext by the US to avoid its own obligations under the same treaty to disarm its own nukes and to share nuclear technology with everyone else.

South Africa:

03-05-2010 11:50 | Energy Crisis | Globalisation | Social Struggles | World

The sight of people, mostly women or children, walking kilometres over dusty roads to haul wood back to their homes for cooking, heat and light is not uncommon in South Africa’s rural areas. Likewise, every winter, fires rampage through the thousands of shanty towns that dot the urban landscape because people are forced to use dangerous sources of energy like coal and paraffin.

Iran’s ace weapon: Why the US won’t gamble on an Iranian war

23-04-2010 13:00 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | World

Given the crescendo of veiled and increasingly unveiled military threats by the US and Israel against Iran, one has to admire the Iranians for their coolness under extreme pressure. The latest despicable – and in some legal opinion, criminal – threat by the White House that it would use atomic weapons against nuclear-unarmed Iran in the event of a conflict has been dismissed by the authorities in Tehran, who say they remain determined to pursue their civilian nuclear energy programme.

Goldman Sachs has been accused of fraud What is coming out of all this are the clever tricks of the trade, i.e. how to make money from money, without actually investing in the real economy, and in the process “advise” people on how to lose their money while making the likes of Goldman Sachs very rich... until it all crashes of course.
