Off Balance Among the Hungry in Haiti

05-02-2009 20:26 | Ecology | Globalisation | Repression | South Coast | World

This morning one of my favorite blogs made me stop and think. I like “No Impact Man” for a lot of reasons, and it’s the only blog that I get delivered to my email. The author is a father in New York City, and he is taking part in a great experiment to prove that anyone anywhere can reduce his or her impact on the environment. Today he suggested that “it might be fun if we all--the entire community on this blog--weighed in and told each other something they've seen or an experience they've had or someone they love that makes them feel like they don't want to change a thing.”

Waterford Crystal: ‘We’re occupying this plant to save our jobs’

05-02-2009 11:18 | Free Spaces | Globalisation | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | World

Workers at the Waterford Crystal factory in Ireland have delivered a powerful example of how to take on the recession – they are occupying their plant to keep it open. The factory is owned by Waterford Wedgewood, which went into receivership on 5 January. The receiver suggested that the plant move to a three-day week. Workers were reluctant to go along with this and were suspicious of the motives behind it. Many believed that the factory would close as soon as they were out the door. It turned out the receiver had the same idea.

Is economic growth sustainable?

04-02-2009 23:03 | COP15 Climate Summit 2009 | Analysis | Energy Crisis | Globalisation | South Coast | World

The debate surrounding the extent to which the burning of fossil fuels leads to climate change misses a more fundamental point. That is, fossil fuels are an inherently finite resource. This resource is dwindling at an accelerating rate as economies such as those of China and India expand rapidly. Fossil fuels will run out. Maybe not in the next 10, 20 or 30 years but they will run out.

A new mobilisation could revitalise politics in the UK - but only if you get inv

04-02-2009 22:52 | Analysis | Globalisation | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

For the first time in my life I resent paying my taxes. Until now I have seen this annual amputation as a civic duty - like giving blood - necessary to sustain the life of a fair society. Suddenly I see it as an imposition. Its purpose has reverted to that of the middle ages: subsidising the excesses of a parasitic class. A high proportion of the taxes I pay will be used to bail out companies which have used every imaginable ruse to avoid paying any themselves.

Violence in Sri Lanka

04-02-2009 22:24 | Anti-militarism | Ecology | Globalisation | World

The dire and deteriorating human rights situation in Sri Lanka, where hundreds of civilians have reportedly been killed over the past few weeks, including an incident where one hospital was bombed a number of times, has only fleetingly made the news in the UK. However for the many Tamil residents in Lewisham, including many in Ladywell, it is obviously a grave concern, and I know some are still trying to contact friends and relatives to check they are safe.

Obama’s $825 Billion Stimulus Plan Offers Too Little, Too Late

04-02-2009 20:05 | Analysis | Globalisation | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

Within the past two years, Democrats in Washington DC have spent more than $1.5 trillion to help rescue the struggling U.S. economy out of the worst recession since the Great Depression; now, both Houses of Congress are fast-tracking a stimulus package for President Barack Obama that will likely cost the nation more than $1 trillion. Socialists nationwide are rejecting this new call for deficit spending and are calling for programs that will meet the short and long term needs of the nation and create immediate employment for the millions of working people that are unemployed or under-employed.

'Crisis' General Strike in France, Paris some rioting.

30-01-2009 00:09 | Globalisation | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | World

PARIS (AFP) — More than a million French workers took to the streets Thursday to voice anger and fear of job losses during a one-day strike over President Nicolas Sarkozy's handling of the economic crisis. Billed as a "Black Thursday," the nationwide day of action caused less transport disruption than expected but the strike was well supported, with a quarter of France's five million public sector workers downing tools.

The Landless Workers Movement and the American "bubble"...

28-01-2009 17:47 | Globalisation | South Coast | World

The next elections and our national history can both charge you for some unfortunate incidents, President: I am sure the ministers of the Supreme did not know that "Raposa-Serra-do-sol" is a rich mineral province, full of rare, expensive and strategic metals and Certainly neither they knew it was full of foreigners or they wouldn't have granted it to our noble brothers of the forest. There are similar attempts in progress, Mr. President, this time involving major public companies, which delivered to individuals, further impede the lives of our people.
