How Not to Support Democracy in the Middle East

13-06-2009 09:55 | Globalisation | World

Mubarak, the person that every every Egyptian has in his heart!
President Barack Obama's speech in Cairo to the Muslim world marked a welcome departure from the Bush administration's confrontational approach. Yet many Arabs and Muslims have expressed frustration that he failed to use this opportunity to call on the autocratic Saudi and Egyptian leaders with whom he had visited on his Middle Eastern trip to end their repression and open up their corrupt and tightly controlled political systems

N. Korea sentences 2 U.S. journalists to 12 years of hard labor

08-06-2009 20:45 | Globalisation | World

North Korea on Monday sentenced two American journalists to 12 years of hard labor in a case widely seen as a test of how far the socialist state was willing to take its confrontational stance toward the United States. The Central Court, the highest court of North Korea, held the trial of the two Americans, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, from Thursday to Monday and convicted them of “committing hostilities against the Korean nation and illegal entry....

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization: Prospects For A Multipolar World

01-06-2009 18:21 | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Workers' Movements | World

"As an earlier quote mentioned, the SCO is composed of six member states and four observers representing a true diversity of cultures, civilizations, histories and political systems, from many of the world's oldest and most venerable traditions to some of its newest nations, from the world's two most populous states to Kyrgyzstan with slightly over five million citizens, and political structures ranging from secular to religious and multi-party to single-party. The internal demographic composition of the ten members and observers, excluding Mongolia, is also a rich tapestry of ethnic, national, linguistic and confessional pluralism and variety.

In additional to calling for a just, rational and peaceful world in a global situation that was little enough of any of the three, the Declaration contained both an appeal and blueprint for the sort of international order required as an antidote to the current one of unipolarity, unilateralism, cutthroat competition, cynical complacency, brute force and war."

Any news on G8 Italy?

31-05-2009 13:27 | Globalisation | World

I was wondering if some one could provide some details about the July G8 Summit and subsequent protests in Aquila, Italy? Since it has been moved to mainland Italy there is now a renewed opportunity to organize in large numbers but up until this point, at least here in the UK, I havent been able to locate any good information about the protests. All I know at this point is that it will take place from around the 8-11 July and that the Schengen rules governing free travel have already been suspended. Any news around the Summit/Protests would be much appreciated.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization: Prospects For A Multipolar World

28-05-2009 11:44 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | World

Contrary to Samuel Huntington's concept of the allegedly inevitable clash of civilizations, the conclusion drawn in the SCO framework was that harmonized interactions between civilizations and their mutual assistance were possible.

"The contours of an alliance of five non-Western civilizations – Russian, Chinese, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist – began to materialize."

The world is at a historical crossroad with the security and even survival of humanity at stake. One path continues along the way that has been pursued to date, of the right of might and every person for himself regardless of the consequences. The other is one of a more rational, just, peaceful and multipolar alternative.

Obama’s Animal Farm: Bigger, Bloodier Wars Equal Peace and Justice

20-05-2009 00:19 | Analysis | Globalisation | Repression | World

"The deteriorating position of the US is manifest in the tightening circle around all the roads leading in and out of Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul as well as the expansion of Taliban control and influence throughout the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Obama’s inability to recruit new NATO reinforcements means that the White House’s only chance to advance its military driven empire is to escalate the number of US troops and to increase the kill ratio among any and all suspected civilians in territories controlled by the Afghan armed resistance."
