Students Arise – Anti-fees/cuts Actions Coming Up
07-11-2010 12:22
Will S Williams MP keep his pledge?Or will he prove to be another back-sliding MP, and like so many LibDem MP's utterly corrupted by power?
Now is the time for current and prospective higher education students to take to the streets. Resist. Strike. Occupy.
Anti Cuts Student writes: This is what Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West, pledged before the elections: “I hope you will be pleased to learn that it remains the policy of the Liberal Democrats to scrap tuition fees for all students undertaking their first undergraduate level degree. I believe it is right both in principle and in practice to scrap the tuition fee model of part-financing for higher education. In addition, I think it is only fair that part and full-time students should be treated equally, whatever the system, when studying for their first degree. The Liberal Democrats will therefore also abolish fees for part-time students studying for a first undergraduate level degree.” From http://www.stephenwilliams.org.uk/pages/fees.html
We don't think he will keep his pledge, will he prove us wrong? And if he wont keep his pledge, what shall we do with him?

UKCMRI proposed lab site photos - Petition Started
06-11-2010 16:22
Here are photos of the site proposed for a massive bioresearch laboratory, alongside St Pancras International Station, 6 underground lines, near 2 major national stations and thousands of people's homes in busy central London. There is still time to send in objections/comments - a petition has now been started to oppose this - link below.............
Here are photos of the central London site proposed for the massive UKCMRI bioresearch laboratory project planned to handle "Biosafety Level 3" extremely dangerous pathogens in 79,000 square metres of building on 3.6 acres of land behind the British Library, alongside St Pancras International Station, 6 underground lines, near King's Cross and Euston stations and thousands of people's homes in busy central London. It would be estimated to cost £600 million and a further £100 million per year to operate, and the government have offered £220 million towards this at a time of brutal cutbacks.
The planning application process is underway and although the formal consultation period has ended, council staff have indicated they will continue to receive and incorporate as many as possible submissions from any member of the public regarding this proposal. Please see here for link to planning application and guide to registering objections/comments on Indymedia London website. A petition has now been started to oppose this - available on paper and online link here to online petition.

Ratcliffe Trial info night at the Sumac
06-11-2010 10:25
Ratcliffe on Trial Info Night- Saturday 13th November after People's KitchenIn the early hours of April 13th 2009 a highly expensive and widely
condemned policing operation saw 114 climate campaigners arrested on
suspicion of conspiring to commit aggravated trespass and criminal
damage. In what has been deemed the largest ever ‘pre-emptive’ arrest,
hundreds of police burst into a meeting room where plans were being made
to safely shut down Ratcliffe-on-Soar, the UK’s second largest coal
fired power station.
All charges were dropped for the majority of the 114, but 26 have been
committed to Nottingham Crown Court on a charge of conspiracy to commit
aggravated trespass. All entered a plea of not guilty.
20 are on trial from November 22nd 2010 and admit that they planned to
shut down the power station, but argue that they are not guilty because
they were acting to prevent the greater crimes of death and serious
injury caused by climate change.
Six others are being tried in January 2011 and are pleading not guilty
since they hadn’t decided to take part in the action at the time of
arrest.
We'll hear two defendants from the first trial discuss their experience
over the last 18 months, find out how the legal process happens in the
case like this, and what the issues are. There will also be some
discussion of the issues surrounding the second trial.
Bracken Hill Estate goes Commons [1]

Former Botanical Gardens reopenedremember, remember, the fifth of november...
Bracken Hill House, North Road, Leigh Woods, BS8 3PL welcomes its new tenants!

As the smoke from bonfire night clears up, Bracken Hill House, North Somerset, is found housing surprising new tenants. A group calling themselves “The Bracken Hill Estate Conservation Group” have taken up lodging in the abandoned former Botanical Gardens. They are opposed to plans to develop the mansion and grounds into new upmarket dwellings. The planned building works could endanger some of the rare species still present in the gardens, the group says. They want to preserve the estate in its present state and reopen it to the public as a sustainable community centre.
“We believe that the development would be ecologically and socially detrimental to the area” a spokesperson of the group says. “Not only is there a very special ecosystem on the land itself, it also lies in the middle of a conservation area”. But not only ecological reasons motivate the action “The gardens used to be open to the public. Now they are getting converted into luxury homes for a fortunate few for profit. This at a time of public spending cuts and unaffordable housing”.
Bracken Hill Estate was controversially put up for sale by the University of Bristol in 2004. The purchasers, a property developer specialising in high-end conversions, want to erect new dwellings and a road on the land. The development has sparked concern after members of the public claimed that it endangered some of the rare animals and plants that remain in the gardens. A campaign against the planning application however failed in 2009. Building works are planned to start in 2011 .
The new tenants plan to reopen Bracken Hill House as a Community Centre housing horticultural and economic research and education as well as arts projects. “All our activities will be free of charge and open to all”.
