15-03-2010 18:15I have just returned from the Zapatista village of Bolon Ajaw, Chiapas, where on 6th February 230 civilian Zapatistas took part in an action to retake control of their “reclaimed lands” which had been invaded and taken over since 20 January by the paramilitary group OPDDIC. For the state and business interests, the Zapatistas and their determination to defend Mother Earth are “a problem” standing in the way of the realisation of multi-million tourist investments.
14-03-2010 20:28Boca En Boca (Word of Mouth) is a new monthly Chiapas magazine, now on it's third edition. It aims to diseminate what happens in the organised indigenous communities such as those of the Zapatistas and Other Campaign adherents. A pdf of an English translation is available from:

In March this year some members of the Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group will be traveling to the Autonomous Zapatista communities in Chiapas to visit the communities and see how their struggle for a dignified life is progressing, to observe the current state of human rights in Chiapas, and to discuss how we here in the UK can continue and improve our support for the Zapatista movement of Mexico's indigenous south.

These are Nuevo San Gregorio, Nuevo Salvador Allende, Nuevo San Pedro, 6 de Octubre, Poblado Laguna El Suspiro, Ojo de Agua el Progreso, San Jacinto Lacanjá, Nueva Galilea, Benito Juárez, Ojo de Agua La Pimienta and Chuncerro
On 22 January, some 120 indigenous people who had lived for 20 years in the villages of El Suspiro and Laguna San Pedro, in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in the Lacandon jungle, were evicted by federal police, units of the Mexican army, and personnel from the office of Federal Prosecution for Environmental Protection (Profepa).

17-01-2010 20:58Fears, rumour, lies and repression
In the last months of 2009, the fierce repression of communities and targeted individuals by the state and federal forces, the army and paramilitary groups has increased and extended. These actions are now not only targeting Zapatista communities, Other Campaign adherents and human rights defenders, but now also campesino groups not involved with the Other Campaign. False rumours and press releases appeared predicting an uprising in 2010 and describing finds of stores of arms.
22-12-2009 22:29Today is the 12th anniversary of the massacre.

05-10-2009 19:53Last month, the Tseltal population of San Sebastian Bachajon, municipality of Chilon, Chiapas, peacefully regained control of the booth collecting payments from visitors to the waterfalls at Agua Azul. In doing this, they were exercising their legitimate right to protect and manage the natural resources in their territory. The response of the government, headed by Juan Sabines, has been to intimidate and threaten the community by despatching about 250 police to the area..
27-09-2009 15:17With high quality images from our twinned autonomous municipality '16 de Febrero' and other Zapatista communities, the 2010 calendar is essential for activists and supporters alike. All funds raised from the sale of the calendar will be shared between Kiptik, who support water, health, media and art projects in Zapatista communities, and Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Group's support of autonomous health clinics and schools in the Chiapas highlands region.
