Defending Mother Earth at Bolon Ajaw
15-03-2010 18:15
I have just returned from the Zapatista village of Bolon Ajaw, Chiapas, where on 6th February 230 civilian Zapatistas took part in an action to retake control of their “reclaimed lands” which had been invaded and taken over since 20 January by the paramilitary group OPDDIC. For the state and business interests, the Zapatistas and their determination to defend Mother Earth are “a problem” standing in the way of the realisation of multi-million tourist investments.New Chiapas Monthly Newsletter

Boca En Boca (Word of Mouth) is a new monthly Chiapas magazine, now on it's third edition. Fears, rumour, lies and repressionIn the last months of 2009, the fierce repression of communities and targeted individuals by the state and federal forces, the army and paramilitary groups has increased and extended. These actions are now not only targeting Zapatista communities, Other Campaign adherents and human rights defenders, but now also campesino groups not involved with the Other Campaign. False rumours and press releases appeared predicting an uprising in 2010 and describing finds of stores of arms.

Last month, the Tseltal population of San Sebastian Bachajon, municipality of Chilon, Chiapas, peacefully regained control of the booth collecting payments from visitors to the waterfalls at Agua Azul. The response of the government, headed by Juan Sabines, has been to intimidate and threaten the community by despatching about 250 police to the area..New Zapatista Solidarity Calendar 2010 - Out Now!
