'Sworn Enemies'? A Response To George Monbiot from Media Lens

07-11-2012 11:04

Hi George

It's good to know that your email is intended in a 'friendly and constructive spirit'. We hope you will post a link to this response on your home page and via Twitter.

You write that Media Lens is a 'project whose purpose is to engage and persuade progressive journalists by critiquing their work and encouraging people to write to them'.

We do, of course, encourage readers to send polite emails to journalists. But our primary purpose is to raise public awareness by highlighting examples of corporate media bias. What people do with that awareness is really up to them. Our hope is that it feeds into activism, campaigning and the creation of non-corporate media like MediaBite, News Unspun and BS News.

Above all, we're trying to stimulate debate and participation. Engaging with journalists is certainly part of that, but we have few illusions about influencing media employees who often have little room for manoeuvre and who are deeply dependent on the corporate system. We do hope for marginal improvements as a direct result of our work - they do happen and do matter - but it's not a primary concern.

Scottish Census case against Barbara Dowling adjourned again

26-09-2012 14:20

The case against peace activist Barbara Dowling on a criminal charge of failing to comply with the 2011 Census was scheduled for Tuesday 25 September but has now been adjourned again until 19 Feb 2013, 10am, at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

In Scotland, a large contract for the census was awarded to CACI Ltd, British subsidiary of a US-based defence contractor implicated in serious human rights violations at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq for which it faces no criminal sanctions although some former Abu Ghraib prisoners are bringing a civil lawsuit against the company in the US. Nearly 200,000 households in Scotland failed to return the 2011 Census questionnaire as required by law, many in protest at CACI's involvement, but just five prosecutions have been brought.

The Return Of The King – Tony Blair And The Magically Disappearing Blood

02-08-2012 19:43

How many war crimes does a western leader have to commit before he is deemed persona non grata by the corporate media and the establishment? Apparently there is no limit, if we are to judge by the prevailing reaction to Tony Blair's return to the political stage.

I wrote to my MP regarding the harrrassment of Barbara Tucker

13-07-2012 20:02

I went to see my MP Mark Lazarowicz (Labour, Edinburgh North and Leith) and asked him if he could stop the harassment of Barbara – she’s not even allowed blankets now. He’s going to write to Home Secretary Theresa May - if that will do any good. MPs are off on their summer break now. I would love to see them trying to sleep in a chair with no blankets and no umbrella for just one night never mind the 175 days Barbara has had no shelter. She has been arrested 45 times in her six and a half years in the Square – for advocating peace!

STWC - get your views about their role on 15 Feb 2003 onto the big screen

01-06-2012 14:50

There's a film being made about the anti-war protests of 15 Feb 2003, the film makers "working closely with the Stop the War Coalition" amongst others. It doesn't sound like STWC will be claiming their share of responsibility for the failure of the day - by doing their utmost to stop any civil disobedience or resistance for example. The invitation suggests that the "Arab Revolutions and the subsequent Indignados and Occupy Movements" started here. Oh really? You may well not be selected if you present an alternative view of the day, but here are the details in case you'd like to take part.
