Iraq war opponent Cindy Sheehan resigns from the Democratic Party

American antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan addressed an open letter to Congress May 26 announcing that she was leaving the Democratic Party, which now controls both houses of the legislature. Sheehan, whose 24-year-old son Casey died while serving in the US armed forces in Iraq in April 2004, came to prominence when she set up camp near George W. Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas in August 2005 as a protest against the war.

The five Britons kidnapped in Baghdad work for Garda World, a Canadian security firm. Channel 4 news tonight led with a feature on them, where Jon Snow was pretty sceptical about their chances of survival due to their profession. There are 20,000 foriegn 'private security guards' in Iraq who are widely hated for acting like private mercenaries unconstrained by laws or morals. Jon seemed surprised to hear a few hundred of them have already been killed.

US President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have all personally warned Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that time is running out. Deadlines have gone or are fast approaching. Still, the Bush administration is no closer to achieving the “benchmarks” it demanded of the Iraqi government on January 10 and linked to the success of its current military “surge”.
